old man bought a new car recently to impress his fancy schmancy clients, scoffed at the idea of buying a hybrid like I suggested,
gas prices go brrrrr!
Reminds me of young guys buying hot cars to impress chicks (I was one of them):

- I’m gonna pick up so much ass with this car
- you know the only people impressed will be young kids and adult men right?
- you don’t know **** old man
FF 2 years
- so how many chicks did you score with that car?
- eff you man. I need something faster.

hes got that old world thinking, "if I show up in a new benz, I will impress them!"

Wonder if I made a mistake by NOT taking the Bolt when I had the chance. Probably would be getting a new battery right about now lol.

As for gas prices….love reading the PFC subreddit about people justifying the purchase of a TESLA M3 to ‘save gas’ on their paid off economy car. LoL … that was me also back in the day.

Same as my buddy buying a Model X for $80k to ‘save gas’ and paying $800/month instead of $300/month on his KIA. Mind you he just got a job for $200k/year over his current $90k/year job…
For me, an e-car is approaching a break even proposition -- if it's close I'll do my part by eliminating tail pipe emissions. Another upside for me is that we're looking at installing a quick charger or two at the office for staff that move to to e-cars, $0 for me to spend on fuel.

Took me 6 cars and about $250k to figure out chicks dig flowers more than cars.

It does work but it is not always totally logical, or all comes down to the unknown to mortal men fine details....

In college (early 90s) and afterwards my red 82 Z28 T-Top was an absolute chick magnet, I only paid $1200 for the car at the time. Buddies would borrow the car and come back saying WTH is with this car. It was truly magical. I fixed it up, made it way faster and painted it British Racing Green and boom it no longer worked, all the magic was gone. I replaced it as a DD with a 1994 (brand new) red Jeep YJ with a thought it would recreate the magic, nope not as good (was not the top reason I bought it but still disappointing)--still loved the Jeep though.

BTW, I still have the Z28.... but it has been off the road for decades, on my very long list of projects.

I take it your family are immigrants. Not many Canadians thought a Benz will impress.
My immigrant buddies all think the MB, BMW, or Audi badge is all that matters….old school/world thinking.

I’m quite happy driving an older and more efficient daily. Came within $500 of a 235M…I’m sure it would’ve been fun for a month or two.

Don’t get me wrong I still want a clean MSPORT 128/135 (N54).

Years ago I ran into a salesman who had a pitch about the expensive car he was flogging. "It's more fun than an RRSP"

True.

But have we all become mini Trudeaus with nothing but ego to spend our money on, consequences be damned? Well OK, at least we fund our egos with our own money.

Covid has shifted the foundations of just about everything on the planet including prices and ethics. What do you want to argue about, gas prices or triage. It depends on you're old or drive a lot.

In the oil embargo of the early 1970's a colleague adjusted by not going to the cottage if the weather was iffy.

Going for a short ride uses less fuel than a long ride but it sucks to be in Toronto where it's a long ride to just escape.

A buddy in Caledon does his first shift into second gear as he hits a county road.

And the ones that you do pick up with your car aren't the ones you really want anyway.

Thing is... You're not.
'Sure... You're tail pipe may not be emitting, but... Do you think they're using electric equipment to mine all the resources needed to make those poisonous batteries. That e-car isn't going to last long enough to ever break even on the energy and resources used and the pollution created to manufacture it.
The electric car is the biggest virtue signaling scam in a long time...

Was it Southpark that portrayed electric car owners sniffing their own farts with their holier then thou attitudes?

Funny, I know a number of people that buy Tesla's strictly for the image. Not only do you get to flash that it's expensive (S and X) but you "care" about the environment.

1.40 a ltr is not cheap gas when the barrel is hovering around 80 bucks
Dirt cheap compared to the $2.40 (CAD) they are paying today in the UK for a liter.

How can you have any sympathy for folks in big p/u trucks. Gas is a finite resource. It was never really going to go down for any length of time.

We drive about 25% more than them. Everything is further here, much easier to get around by public transport in the UK. Roads are smaller, cars are smaller, gas mileage is better.
We drive 25% more but their gas is about 70% more expensive. We win?
Gas mileage is better there because they don't use full size pickups to move two kids and soccer equipment.

I lived in the UK and have relatives still there. $30 a month for car insurance, $30 a month for a big cc bike is what my uncle pays. My car insurance is almost 8x that and Ive never been in an accident (20y exp). $720 a year over there vs $4000 here. Thats with a 12 month riding season vs 7 here.
