Gas Prices ...

'Make it $5/L.
People will still buy as much as they did at $1

I don't know anyone who cuts down on their consumption of fuel due to price.
It could drive people to more fuel efficient vehicles or more likely into EV at those levels. At more moderate levels, I agree, peoples behaviour will be affected very little.

At $5/l you drive poor people out of the market.

The number of children's Presto passes will go up.

The last time we had peak prices it did slowly increase some smaller vehicle sales and decreased the larger ones. Once the prices dropped that flipped on a dime.

What I found interesting back then, sure it is happening now (just not buying gas like I used to). Costco gas is cheaper all the time (compared to most stations). To me it seems it is about the same cents per litre lower regardless of price, not a pure percentage.... when prices are high the lineups (specially large vehicles) get out of control, when lower much smaller lineups. Seems when it costs $150 to fill the SUV tank $10 is a lot of savings worth a long wait, when it only costs $100 no need to save the $10--or maybe $9 now even though te wait is much shorter now, just buy gas anywhere....

As I was cruising the Grand River today, 91(on the rez) was cheaper at $1.401/L than 87 in town.
Partial win.

Thing is... Switching to a smaller car/electric car might "sound" like a good strategy to ease the pain of high fuel costs, but...
Once you factor in things like depreciation, interest etc. you might still be ahead keeping your hemi and just rationing its use.

I mean you might save a bit on gas, but... You loose big money on selling/trading in our current ride. If you buy new you lose bigly on depreciation as soon as you drive off the lot plus MOAR if you have to borrow to make the purchase...
In any case... Owning/running a car is a money pit. I guess we all have to decide how deep a pit we can live with.
It beats walking though.

My guess it is more about people at or close to the natural replacement point deciding to go smaller, not so much people rushing out to downsize a vehicle they do not need to replace.

I know lots of people that left because ‘Canada is going to the shitter’. So they went to greener pastures.

Many came back because it ain’t as pretty as they thought when they had to live there instead of being tourists for a month at a time.

I agree that Canada is one of the best countries in the world in which to live. However why do we have to take that as the bar. What ever happened to achieving one's personal best?

Why do we, both nationally and often personally, look at someone worse than ourselves and say "Well at least I'm not as bad as they are" instead of trying to do everything possible to become our best?

You don't have to be able to dock a space shuttle at a space station blindfolded but you could start by trying to get the car between two parallel lines at the mall parking lot.

Or... If you're lucky like me and have your 4.6L V8 Crew Cab pickup totaled in a wreck.
'Replace with a 4cyl econo box... Spent $40/week on gas rather than $140... Lol

I may look like Mr. Bean driving down the road, but honestly... I don't care whether gas is $1.10 or $1.48.

Trying to hit 3,000km/tank again on the Volt…currently around 1500km.

EDIT: holy hell….WRX appears to finally be sold by the dealership…7 months.

Housing prices are driving people out of the city. Gas prices won't let them drive back in. Public transit sucks.

Elected representatives only look ahead to the next election. You can't fix transit or housing in four years.

This has the potential of getting really ugly. How many marginal pay workers can work from home?

Is the increase simply from the ramping up of the carbon tax that the whole country voted for?

Only dictators only get 100% of the vote. Cosplay dictators don't.

Public transit sucks.

It's not practical for most people.
The only people who can live with relying on public transit are those who live, work and play in urban areas.
And of those... Only those who need carry nothing more than a briefcase/backpack and their $8 latte during their commute.
And of those... Only the ones working 9 to 5 day jobs.

I've never had a job where public transportation was a viable option.

'It's the same with these bicycle freaks who advocate for more and more concessions to make commuting by bicycle more widespread.
This ain't Amsterdam bro.
How many people can actually ride a bike to work on the daily... In the summer, never mind Toronto in February.

People in 1970s did, so we will too. We will not drive less, but will switch to a more efficient cars or even electric.
Pretty sure the gas shortage in the 70's was rigged.

We have first past the post, and enough stupid people, to get us to where we are now.
