Municipal Election 2022

At the town council level we have candidates saying they will call for a audit of municipal finance , stop the 24 floor high rises and put an end to the tow truck plague that grabs cars when you leave the property you parked on , with ample signage.
The guy that is the incumbent has been there for 6 yrs while this mess has unfolded, but he’s focused now ……

North Halton did the reclaimed old oil to keep the dust down for years on gravel roads then switched to watering them down with calcium chloride solution First couple rains were pretty interesting.

went to a cottage, had a three way, didnt buy them dinner after...... timing indeed interesting

Our local candidate has been in for two terms and is a “career “ small politics guys, wants to solve parking and high rise issues , yes we all do
The guy opposing wants to create space within our local parks for local indigenous to have dedicated space . I don’t care if I picnic or throw a frisbee with the indigenous, am I a problem for them ? Who next gets there own park?

And here we are just trying to get them to cut the grass properly.

Well, in Streetsville, I haven't seen any sign posted of my sitting councilor George Carlson only some challengers.
Carlson has been representing ward 11 for years and confident of a repeat. Not that I am looking, but I haven't heard anything from anyone why someone should be councilor member or not. There is the obvious concerns about the raising property tax but that pretty much for any place.

Something that sticks out in Streetsville and Meadowvale is the construction of 5 story storage unit built by Orlando Company right on the corner of Erin Mills Parkway and Britannia ( Gladiator Burger - burger meet up) . It's a giant eyesore, does not fit in the community, blocks resident view of the sky. How this project got approved is beyond belief. Orlando Company must be very influential in Mississauga. The rendering of the giant storage unit looks like in belongs on the back of a freight train. Ride by and come take a look for yourself. Likely, your first words when you see it. wtf...

Another sticky point for resident. Nothing say Streetsville is a village in the city (our motto) like a giant flashing electronic billboard on the railway overpass (Britannia and Queen Street). Advertising, LottoMax, Casino Rama and the She Hulk. Its on and flashing 24/7 in drivers and residents eyes non stop. This should be class as distracting drivers. Enough of the flashing electronic signs/ build boards!

In both cases, there is no concern for the residents at all. Who are they representing?

Well… they are representing the community managers interest. What you and I want are very important, until they are in office . Then it’s what is pumping the bottom line which keeps them paid , and allows things like junkets to Sweden to see how things are done there.

More conveniently timed charges against a councilor. Really happened or a hatchet job? Timing is very suspicious.

What's your go to mindset, "where there's smoke there's fire" or "innocent until proven guilty"?

The problem is that it must be taken seriously but there's no suitable punishment for a false charge. It's somehow unfair that the alleged victim's reputation must be concealed but the alleged perpetrators is not.

Even at the municipal level it’s getting harder to find a candidate that’s not a goofball

You are falling into the trap.

Re-phrase to: The guy opposing wants TAX PAYERS TO PAY FOR creating space. See how that flies.

Similarly, "We the XXXXXX Party of Canada will spend $XX million on Blah, blah, blah" should be "We the XXXXXX Party of Canada will spend $XX million of your taxpayer dollars on Blah, blah, blah"

Do not underestimate the simple minded voter. They think free means no one pays for it.

The local community rag had a list of candidates (31 running for mayor) and it is important to vote to keep the nutbars out.

Why be a municipal councillor? they all pay a bit different, Oakville will give you about 80K , for a part time job. You can do some professional development and pick up some 'suplimental' pay being on committees. If you work it and become also a regional councillor, which several do , now you pick up another 80-90k . It pays pretty well , which is why you see a lot of people looking for these spots.
Getting appointed as a school board trustee is a starting point , really part time job for a decent cheque. Lots of seats at the trough if you lean that way.

Never considered this type of route but May be worth it for someone that wants to try and make a difference.

Unfortunately typically money must be had first to put up a good campaign.

That's why most new politicians (or politicians jumping into a new arena) have a strong connection to a booster/campaign manager. Politician is the face but the drive is behind the scenes. It works differently in smaller centers where some of the lifers were first elected when it paid approximately minimum wage. They have voted in a few decades of raises so now they are an invincible incumbent making bank.

My gut feeling is that the most heard name gets elected. Incumbents get it in the local press, photo ops and baby kissing. A zillion street signs would also work.

It's like an end aisle display at the grocery store. If it's end aisle it's assumed to be premium or on sale.

I dont know most of the local candidates. One has at least three times as many signs as the next closest. I saw a single sign for one I think will be great but her signs are probably outnumbered 1000:1.
