Today's candidate for space cadet of the year is April Engelberg trying to win Spadina-Fort York with a lift bridge to the islands that can be built for 10-15M. I'd be shocked if the final cost wasn't more than an order of magnitude higher than her prediction.

I think she forgot to add a 0 or a few at the end of that price tag.

Are you saying that a lift bridge costs more than a nice single family home in the City? Who woulda thunk it. How dumb do you have to be that you don't look at that number and scratch your head. Getting it all the way to a press release proves that they really do have the smarts that people expect of Toronto councillors. I also like that she touts that you can walk across in a minute (and biking is faster) but leaves out the time it takes to get to the portlands and time waiting for the bridge.

The deserves is the part that gets me. Another burden on the taxpayer. Then do they scrap the ferries?
And add ttc looping from ferry terminal to Portland's at a higher cost. This one is a shining star of stupidity.

Edit:
She says it could be built and operational within four years for 10-15M. She's cookoo. It would be a miracle if required studies and design were done in four years for her proposed budget. All construction would be extra time and money.

Meanwhile tory Wade's in about "respecting" the island residents. That means they've called him and dont want riff raff to access their publicly funded private paradise.

EDIT 2:
If she wanted pedestrian access to the islands, to me it makes sense to utilize the existing tunnel (that cost 82.5M to build) and build a path from near the terminal to the publicly accessible space (something to ensure public can't enter restricted airport areas). There would be a bitchfest by the airport operator about use of the tunnel but construction cost and timeline may actually meet her expectations.

Maybe she’s the gal for the job and all the middle managers need to clear her a path . The Billy bishop tunnel was genius, scraping ferries cant happen fast enough .
You cant build a lift bridge for 15m , you can’t get one for double , but it’s a place to start the conversation.

She would raise the IQ level at city hall.

15 mil will be spent on study after study and public consultation and research of negative/positive impact on the environments and naming rights and choice of color and which private company will buy it after and who will maintain it and on and on and on

All they need is a zip line.

The 10-15 Million might be an accurate figure for the yearly maintenance.

The original islanders were a unique breed and IMO added character to the place. Now, I'm not sure. It seems everything is being sterilized to blandness. If Mount Everest was in Toronto they'd be putting in a wheelchair ramp.

Oh good, a semi-political thread that's not locked. Try to be civil folks.

At least one Barrie mayoral candidate is making vehicle noise a part of his platform. He wants numerical sound level limits for vehicle noise in Barrie.

Build a pedestrian tunnel at the narrowest point on the east side, force taller boats to go around. Much easier, faster, and less complex than a lift bridge.

Keeps you away from the airport, but those poor residents are going to have a fit when the riff raff start coming in hoards.

Continuing the charade of a functional deep water port in downtown toronto is costing millions. Just admit that it's dead, redpath will relocate and become condos and life is simpler.

As for forcing all sailboats to go west, that's not that big a channel and it has ferries. Probably won't go well.

I still say utilize the existing tunnel and give them a secured path to the park. Residents will throw less poo as the riff-raff is coming in at the far end instead of right beside their house, no impact on boat traffic, minimal cost (some fencing but probably an expensive extortion payment to YTO), easy to walk to from downtown, etc.

Trying to find candidates that don't use all the in crowd buzzwords.

Our local candidate has been in for two terms and is a “career “ small politics guys, wants to solve parking and high rise issues , yes we all do
The guy opposing wants to create space within our local parks for local indigenous to have dedicated space . I don’t care if I picnic or throw a frisbee with the indigenous, am I a problem for them ? Who next gets there own park?

Even at the municipal level it’s getting harder to find a candidate that’s not a goofball

The incumbant has the needle swung almost all the way towards them already and their competition thinks that is the path to victory?
