Where to get a puppy?

Trying to figure out how to teach her to stick to a certain part of the yard….ideally fenced away from the kids.

Walks….now she fighting with the leash as she’s not used to it, but it’ll take time.

She’s a mini aussiedoodle. Very quiet the first night but showed signs this morning to be let out and did her thing 2x today.

This will def be an adjustment but the whole family is excited so let’s see how long that lasts.

She was immovable last night and this morning until her paws hit the snow and then a different dog.
So, you ended up getting the exact same breed I suggested to you, but the size wifey wanted. Win-win. :ROFLMAO:
Crongrats!
I highly suggest you buy and read Dog Training for Dummies. You'll have no reason for obedience training if you follow that book.

Yup, it basically came down to:
- Bernedoodle - too big and sold before we got there
- Cavapoo - I wasn't a fan as they're super small
- Aussiedoodle - wife was worried but I was on board

Breeder stated 20-25lbs but I have a feeling it'll be closer to 35-40lbs which is still in line with my preference (and 5lbs above wife's preference)

Time will tell, but so far so good. I look forward to going home but work functions tonight until 9-10pm keep me away.

Since I'm at a small construction site...I wonder if anyone would care if I just brought the dog here with me.

Some dogs like to do their business in the same area. Our yard is big and not fenced. So, we’ve taught our pup to do its business in the area we want. Now, it will head towards that area when we let it out.

Keep attentive and it will demonstrate behaviours indicating it needs to do its business. A few minutes after waking up from a sleep or nap. A few minutes after meal times. First thing in the morning etc.

For us, Cosmo tends to sniff around the house and the doors exiting the house. Praise it when it does something good like do it’s business after letting them out etc.

Some dogs are quick and easy while some are dumb as stumps. Just like their owners.

Watch Dog Whisperer. At best you may learn something that works for you. At worst, you get to see other peoples' dog troubles and be comforted that you're not alone.

Rewards and praise, keep your expectations very very low for the first few months.
Don't use a retractable leash while training on walks, consider a harness if she pulls/fights the leash as a collar can cause injury. Set schedules and expect accidents.
A dog will give you unconditional love, you're family has to give it back. You're a pack now! We do doggy days in the summer if you're interested let me know. We have 2 fenced areas for off leash fun and training.

If I didn't bring my last dog to work the boss would want to know why.

I guess this thread is a full puppy thread…

Any recommendations for food for puppy? There are so many options it’s insane.

Research the breed.
Some breeds cannot tolerate certain foods.
For example. Ours cannot eat chicken. So we have to get food with no chicken added.

Your breeder may also have some good suggestions. Also you can ask your vet.

Oh and. Try not to teach her to eat human food.
I know it's cute to give her a piece of kielbasa but she may learn to always beg for it when you are eating dinner.

This dog is weird...super chill and relaxed in the house. It doesn't even want to move so we have to pick it up.

Soon as the paws touch snow...can't slow her down.

Hopefully she becomes more active soon but the kids, wife, and most importantly MIL are happy with her.

Astro turf is my dog solution , rinse three times a summer with a vinegar water solution. Never needs mowing and poo doesn’t stick , it’s golf course commercial grade , five year old and looks new .

Don't get into the habit of letting her out in the backyard to do her business.

If she needs to go, she needs to on a walk.

Ask me how I know.

We have two, a male and a female. The female will only go on a walk, the male will only go in the backyard. We have taken them on extremely long walks and the female will dookie twice. The male wants the backyard when we get home. We can't figure what that's about but he will literally see if he is being watched too. If he is, he won't go. Bashful bugger. He has his spots too.

How the hell do you train them to pee/poo in THAT exact spot? I actually would prefer that.

Right now we take her to the front to an area that doesn't have much grass to begin with, and she's giving signs to the household that she wants to go by whimpering and moving around...which is very helpful.

Next question...harness or collar?

More choices for dogs than children in terms of accessories, toys, etc.

Need to start training my lil one to go on walks. Right now...I get 30ft from the house and she stops and drops.

Progress...I need to temper my expectations here.

Our dog responded well to a halti for walks. We'd leave a collar on him for id/easy handle if he needed to be restrained but add the Halti for walks. Before the halti, he got scared a few times and backed up so fast his collar popped off over his head. He'd paw at the halti a bit but he didn't hate it. We used a harness for a bit but halti was smaller and seemed to work better for him (direct head control instead of attaching yourself to a freight train).
