Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

As far as doing things to the house I guess this could be kitchen or welding as well.
Re arranging the kitchen gadgets freed up a narrow base cabinet and I wanted to put in a pull out organizer. The narrowest one that made any sense was about three and a half inches too wide. A change of hinges reduced that to one inch too wide.
I cut the pieces in half, removed an inch from the middle and welded the thing back together. Perfect fit.
If I didn't have the welder I could scrapped the wire trays and made wooden ones. The U shaped brackets had enough clearance to bolt together but it was a good welding project for an amateur. If a weld lets go I only lose a jar of peanut butter

Wood prices keep going up up up...like Toronto real estate....
lol...I built a pergola in my garden when I was poorer than now. I got everything done perfectly, even routed some decoration in the vertical 4x4s but ran out of cash when it came to the pergola deck floor. So I used fence boards! Worked fine for years as I’d over engineered the subframe...a little springy but I was going to replace them with 2x4s this year except now I think I’ll wait another year for things to return to normal.
Any suggestions on live edge dining tables? We are finally starting to look at getting a real dining table and want a slightly irregular shaped one, instead of a perfect rectangle. Ideally one that seats 6 - we may have the room to fit in an 8 seater, but I doubt it.
@crankcall We love the live edge in our bathroom and should get a dining table to compliment it.
Are you a DIY guy or looking for ready to dine?
Slabs aren't cheap and dependent on the species. There are a number of suppliers of slabs but they're curb pickup only at the moment. I want some slightly exotic stuff but need to see the grain before I buy. That isn't happening at the moment.
@sburns may have a piece in his back yard you could get a deal on
Improve Canada (Keele / 407) had a bunch of displays a year or two ago but are under lockdown at the moment. It's interesting to see the different approaches.

I want to go to the Woodshed in Smithsville for some wood porn. They have some slabs but mostly dimensional. Part of the allure of live edge is that no two tables will be alike.
DIY would be a challenge. Brutal weight and the equipment to handle it for starters. Then the $39.99 CTC sander will not do much final sanding. The epoxy filing is another learning process. The biggest issue IMO is controlling warpage on a huge piece of wood.
Winners and losers like any other time in history.
Was just talking to my wife saying we will hold off on the fence a year or two. Maybe if prices (retail) ever come back we will do it then. If not then we will have to eat the price.
I know there was talk here before by @crankcall of pricing coming down....but will the customer see that? Or just more money for the wholesale market while we get boned.
retail prices are going nowhere till late fall earliest . mills are still trying to catch up and the bigger projects where a home owner has a crew lined up and prices will come off 15% in November? Well thats 15K off the 100k materials , you wait another yr and maybe ..... the labour doesn't change.
I'll be bold and predict the change will be like most commodities, a 2x4-8 was $2.49 now $8.00 , it may drop to $5.99 but it may never go back to "cheap".
@shanekingsley , we ran through our 'slab experiment' and sold the final thirty slabs off to a retailer in Niagara. The last big coffee tree slabs and the white oak were 60" wide and 14ft long , 2 1/2" thick. Last one is now in the cottage as a dining room table. They aren't that hard to process if you know how , but most weekend woodworkers think too small. My hand held router is 5hp LOL .
We kiln dried all of ours , and that is the secret, DO NOT buy a slab off a guy on kijiji that had them milled and says they are dry, unless you own a moisture meter.
Good sources in the GTA are Exotic wood burlington (they have about 2000 in stock in a second warehouse) , Century Mill north Toronto, Woodshed in Smithville or Talbot Wood in Cayuga

Thanks for those suggestions. We will check them out. Not in a rush since we have an old dining table, but it would be nice to get one within the next year or so.
I think it was you who suggested that we go with Superior hardwood for our house and we are really happy with it!

Out with the 16 year old Rotary lift and in with a new Bendpak.
The Rotary was huge and I had to remove the ramps every time I used the lift due to length.
The Benpak being much smaller allows the ramps to stay on Permanently.
Yes these are first world problems.

I’ve been toying with getting one of these to free up from floor space.
How much height do you need? I’ve got 12’ to work with...
Most should be happy with 12'. Just be careful if you lift a van so you don't crush it. Many come in two different heights to accommodate lower ceilings. It looks like his posts are <8'.
I am saddened by the obviously themed wall and no pics of car.
