Cadillac Fairview is in the hot seat for taking pictures of shoppers at five of their malls. It was done without permission or advisement. It was done pre-Covid I assume as masks would nullify much of the info they wanted, mainly the demographics of the shoppers but other info was collected as well.

"Can I borrow your phone?" could negate a contact although the numbers would be minimal.

The restaurant spokesperson made a point and I don't know if they were denied specific stats or if the stats didn't exist. Were restaurants being used as scapegoats for the increase instead of, for example, schools?

Was Zoodles under risk ten times a day or a hundred or more? What are the rates for the average shopping outing?

A 100% lockdown may not be necessary if the contacts are controlled and you can't control things you don't know.
My gut reaction was 'private property' too bad.

But i dug in a bit and yeah, not just pictures; they were actually using face recognition software and then storing that information for analysis. That's a big leap from a camera on private property.

Watching the UK Prime Minister's Covid report on the BBC now. England going into lockdown again as Covid inpatients admissions in hospitals are increasing too fast. There is a real worry that if this continues they will have to choose who lives and who dies as there’s a very real concern about being overwhelmed again. The virus is spreading faster than their worst case scenario.

You mask and science deniers should have a look. This is our future if you don’t pay attention to the rules.

A problem if the facial recognition was of race or gender importance. The mall is mostly race "A" and they don't like race "B" so make sure mall our staff isn't race "B".

I can understand needing info to keep a mall profitable, that the stores and ambiance are compatible with the majority demographic. A seniors mall with hip hop music or a hip hop crowd being forced to listen 40's crooners doesn't work.

Would it be more or less ethical if instead of cameras they had people with clip boards and click counters?

The difference with the 100% contact-tracing scenario, no exceptions, is that you will KNOW that your whereabouts are being tracked. No entry to the building without scanning your phone. For the duration of this pandemic, your whereabouts have to be tracked. That's just how it is.

For sure the privacy-rights people would have a field day with this. Again ... these people need to be told to get stuffed. Perhaps the mandatory-contact-tracing needs to go hand-in-hand with big penalties for mis-using the information by anyone other than for covid-19 contact-tracing purposes, and that includes prohibiting the police and any other government department or any private entity from using that information in any way whatsoever.

The alternative ... is a second lockdown ... and maybe more serious this time.

Yeah, and data was stored with a third party company (presumably the company that provided the product and software).

A big part of the privacy commissioner's rant seemed to be about expectations. You expect to get glancing shots of you on security cameras at the mall. You do not expect that using a kiosk gets a close up of your face analyzed (and potentially tracked through time and space if you use CF kiosks often). There was no warning that it was happening (and even if there was, that would be a tough sell to get past the privacy commissioner).

Interestingly, it sounds like they werent analyzing all mall users, just those that used or at least came close to the kiosks.

I have no idea how many dangerous exposures I get in a day. I am back at some point next week.

Most days I see upwards of 1000 people and literally dozens in a day pay with coins and this can take up to a minute. The "new" farebox is not used by any other transit company in Ontario. It recognizes coins by weight. So, if a batch of loonies or whatever is made slightly differently the fareboxes just happily keep rejecting then until the software js updated. All the while they are standing less than 2 ft from me. Then when they farebox finally counts the coins it takes a second or 2 for it to then offer the customer the opportunity to hit the transfer button. The transfer takes 2 to 5 seconds to print because they went with a wet ink instead of a dry ink. Some transactions can take a good minute. I have sat at a stop for 5 minutes to get everybody boarded. Why they did not go with Presto is beyond me.

The worst are those who are just out of it or have no sense of urgency at all. A few nickles out of one pocket. A loonie out of another pocket. In the meantime I have to prompt the farebox to add time to the transaction so it does not time out. Many times these out of it sort of folks are not wearing a mask or if they have one they telle they will wear one when they get to their seat. All during this time I am at risk.

This is several interactions per day and I am only one driver out of hundreds. Extrapolate that over the province and country and this represents an unaccounted for super spreader event daily which is under the radar.

Where I am they just updated the audio announcement. Other than that all that has changed is that drivers are being disciplined for not disinfecting their area enough. Nothing has changed to enforce mask wearing by the customers.

And that data would indicate what demographic is more likely to ask questions or what? Seems an odd selective procedure for a general data base.

I'm with you. Maybe I have it wrong or the news had it wrong as I was surprised that kiosks were used 5M times. Maybe they were used so much and this was a test to see what could be determined as kiosk presents every face at a similar distance and angle. Next phase was front door camera?

While facial recognition has its place I am concerned about misuse if the system came into use by the wrong hands.

While recording test results at a RCMP building we weren't allowed to use cameras. So the test guy called out the readings and I wrote them down, pen and paper. Once off site I photoed and texted him the page. The RCMP concern was a leaked photo of an undercover agent in the background.

Apparently casinos use facial recognition to pick out banned players. OK it's their house and known.

So...you don’t believe in science?

Really?
I do believe in science . But are you getting science by a person controlled by China and WHO ?

Do any of these VID protocols make sense . Not to person trained to use PPE correctly .

I don't do things just because .

I believe in Nature

On a completely different topic, the CDC ended the "No Sail" order for cruises. Lots of restrictions and guidelines the cruise lines need to follow in order to restart things, the biggest being a negative test before bordering, but lots of others as well - no more than 7 day cruises, reduced capacity, highly restricted excursions (*nobody* leaves the group) amongst others.

Everyone ready to rush to Florida?

I'm a big cruise fan (have over 10 under our belts now, and I have the waistline to prove it LOL) but there's no way in hell (and a cold day in hell, at that) that I'd set foot anywhere in Florida right now, much less on a cruise ship. I can see things going all sorts of wrong in short order given as how a large percentage of the US population is acting right now. Already there's people on the big cruise forums saying that these new restrictions and guidelines are a bunch of bunk....so you know a good percentage of people are only going to follow them long enough to get to sea and then go full YOLO.

Agreed about avoiding Florida and crusing right now. I would love to hit an all inclusive this February and go back to St. Lucia or Cabo again. As much fun as it would be it is not worth jeopardizing my health, my wife's health or the well being of others.

Thankfully I got to use the RV trailer a few times this summer and the house we moved into last September has a pool. First thing I did this spring was get a new pool heater installed when the pool opened. I got better with the chemistry as the season went on and that pool pretty much made up for the loss of last year's lost trip south.

Maybe the Softub will help make up for the loss of another trip? When it is safe to travel again my wife gets to choose the next destination. If she wants France or Japan she's got it!

Do you just parrot things you think your tribe should say without looking at any of the facts first?

You are so tiring . Use your head instead of BS. Sites . I can think for myself .

If you want to hide then hide . Leave the rest of us alone .

I have been trained in proper PPE use for 27 years . What is happening with the protocols is a joke .

The numbers do not make sense for the lock downs .

WHO is controlled by China . Anything that comes from them use with a grain of salt .

Tam flip flopped on safe issues several times . Government is playing us to do what ever they want .
