Anyone into gardening here?

Thanks for that. It looks like I have a mission this summer to kill the thing. I’m trying to spend about 20 minutes every day doing weeding in the flower beds and between that and heavy mulching most issues are under control except this one.
I had a bunch get out of my shady garden, I was able to kill is with black garbage bags. Cut the bags to cover the goutweed, pin the plastic to the round and wait 10 days.

Mine was totally gone.

I’ve turned into a big softy. Earlier this season we had a couple of cardinals try to make a nest in our gazebo. They did this last year too. We tried to discourage them as the dogs use the gazebo for shade and we use it for bbqs etc so we moved the nest to a better location as they were building it. After about 10 times of removing the nest and them rebuilding it in the gazebo we gave up and decided that we (the cardinal couple and us) would all get along together.

Fast forward to today and the proud parents have had at least one chick. Except said chick had fallen out the nest while mum and dad were getting food. Got a pair of clean blue vinyl gloves and scooped the helpless thing up and put it back in the nest. Mum and dad arrived a bit later and hopefully all is ok.

I’m a surrogate cardinal dad.

I just learned that apparently you can eat hosta shoots-check first obviously but I saw something about sautéed hosta shoots on a gardening forum.

I have a flower bed that’s over run with goat weed (gout weed?). I pull it out, try to get as many roots as I can, but it just comes back. Are there any secret methods to getting rid of this? I don’t want to have to dig up the entire flower bed.
I just found that out about hostas recently too! Cooked some up on Monday and I quite like them. Hubby described it as something like ‘soft asparagus’. Think I’ll cook some more up this weekend 😆
Now to try out those common blue violets…I also have lots of those

Any bird aficionados? The cardinal family seems to have decided today is the day for flying lessons. The chick was found tangled up in the mesh doors of the gazebo early this morning by my wife but managed to untangle himself and has been sitting on the deck under the gazebo ever since. He’s moved a little bit and seems to be breathing ok. Mum and dad are nearby. We haven’t intervened. I’m guessing he’s tired. Just leave him be or scoop him up and put him back in the nest if he hasn’t moved much in the next few hours?

Not an aficionado here, but had a similar situation with a robin a few years ago. I worried about another critter scooping it up, so I put it back in the nest to get some rest and away from danger. There is a balance with too much interference, but I suspect the cardinal lost a lot of energy getting untangled from the mesh.

I was just coming back to update. The little bugger didn’t seem to have very developed feathers and it was getting a bit warm so I scooped him up and put him back in the nest for mum to look after.

There was a storm last night and the beady eyed little bugger seems to be missing. :(

I guess you’ve scoured the area. Are the parents around?

Yep. Couldn’t find him. I guess he could be deep in the nest hopefully. Parents are about, mum’s in the nest right now.
That is a hopeful sign. We are such saps 😂

I was just emptying some water out of a tarp to stop mosquitos breeding and I got swooped by mum and dad and there was a lot of squawking. Lo and behold beady eyes was somewhere under the tarp and didn’t look too happy. I’ll check in on him in a bit. Not sure if I didn’t get him wet. He’s got a good voice though.

Found little beady today under the nest. Poor little guy had just died, I watched mum and dad land nearby and call out to him with no response. I feel weirdly quite sad. Nature is both wonderful and cruel.

Oh no, I was hoping for some good news. Nature is a tough place. It is really a wonder how little ones make it to adulthood with all the predators too. Good on you to lend a hand.

4 baby bunnies in the garden now. Wife planted lettuce in the raised beds. Not sure if there’s a coincidence.

We used to have coyotes but they’ve not been around for a while. We did have foxes, then they went when the coyotes came. There’s a chance we have a fisher in the neighbourhood. A couple of cats have been found mauled to death recently.
Did you give up on jc100 account as it wasn't working?

I started seeing the little ones a couple of weeks ago too. Not in the garden but getting close to the bird feeder. We have a bit of a clover patch in some of the grass. There is a fox that comes around in the morning but almost all know his routine. He does win every now and then.
