2021 Day Trips!

Is there a map of the backroads out there? My biggest worry is getting in there and getting lost far from home.
I like the backroad books and have the gps version installed. The trouble now is I don't bother taking my gps.

I know it's low tech but I carry a compass. A friend once reminded me that while riding in the Ganaraska forest you're always either north or south of Boundary Rd. and you know when you've crossed it. I use that principle while roaming back roads etc.

If you ever go, I can join you.

The good thing with a lot of those roads is, I just tell myself if it gets really bad, I just turn around and go back the way I came. I also found there are cottages and places near most of them, so if something does go wrong, there is a place to go, even if no one is home.

Absolutely gorgeous day yesterday, to me perfect temp and visibility.

Did a run up to Algonquin. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Eventually Kinmount, 503, then Elephant Lake Rd. Which BTW is good now. Last year they tore up the "patchy" part where Elephant becomes Peterson, and now it's new road. (y)

Took 523 to Madawaska then HWY 60 through Algonquin, which was a great run with the weather, and no traffic felt like I had the whole place to myself. Did the whole stretch without stopping.

Went like this.

I’ve got a lot of vacation time left this year with nowhere to go. Should take a day here or there for a nice ride. Mid week, won’t interfere with wife and kids time.

Thanks to Shane, I finally ended up doing the below loop which was long overdue. The below was the route suggested by Shane:

It was the best ride I have had so far this season. A lot of nice roads once you reach country rd 48 east to Rohallion and further. The only change I made in the above route was to hit Five Corners on my way back. So the route really looked something like this when I completed the trip:

Washroom situations - First stop was at Shell on Hwy 48 and 23; no washrooms.
The second stop was at Queen of Fries to grab a quick bite. There is a portable toilet there. Can't comment really on the food as I just ate poutine - no other veg options that I could see. It was either fries or poutine and I went with poutine lol. In my book, poutine is good even if it's bad...
The third stop was at Gooderham at the gas station near the 503 and 507 intersections. Washrooms were available and pretty decent.
The fourth stop was on my way back home - 401 E and Road 26. Shell gas station had a decent washroom as well.

I took a few more stretching breaks too other than these above stops. A few good souls stopped to ask if I was okay when stopped on the roadside, and a motorcyclist on 115s. I may have moved my hands and legs weirdly but that was because everything was numb from the vibrations and my a** was grass sitting on that park bench for that long lol. But seriously thank you!

Update: 507 is under construction and I had read it on the forum. But still went ahead and took that route. Approx. 5 km in the middle is loose gravel, under construction and there is another spot that is being dug up by heavy machinery. Traffic is slow in those parts but I didn't really have any concerns. The rest of the road made up for whatever inconveniences I faced and it was pretty nice.

I did meet a few bikers along the way. Somewhere on Monck Rd, a cruiser on the speed limit. I had to overtake as I was doing 20 above the limit and the road was empty. If you're on the forum, cheers. 2 bikers who were behind me on 507 but disappeared before I took a left on 36.

Out of all the roads, Northeys Bay road was my favorite if I think of it.
Tried to run this route today - google maps didnt co-operate as it was trying to get me back on to 401. Almost covered most of the roads, except on way down at 507. Ended up going round Peterborogh and Lakefield twice trying to figure out how to go to HWY7. Butt hurt - reached-401 home. Saw lot of bikers on 507 going the other way. There was some rider on an enfield riding towards Toronto on 401 who tried to overtake another biker (yellow CBR ??)in the same lane - i watched in disbelief. And there was another guy in vStar or Vulcan not sure who jumped in front of me almost cutting me off. I moved to the far right lane and stayed far away from that maniac.. lol.

Yesterday I did the bunny trail solo, thanks to the earlier posters here - I could use the routes and also Shane's big map. A really nice trip except for the sore wrists and butt with some backache today lol.

Here is the route. 800 something km in total:

I would say Macey's Bay and South Bay road weren't great. They are good but if I'm doing this again, I would skip those to do some other roads. I actually went further on the Honey Harbor Rd and took the Baxter loop coming back as I missed the turn.

I don't even recollect how many times I stopped to stretch and take a break. I did the whole trip in 13 hours or so.

There is a portable washroom at Severn Falls near the parking lot. Apart from that, all the gas stations including the one on Bala rd and one at Burks falls had washrooms. Stopped for lunch at Wally's Burgers at Bala and there was no washroom. Nice kind folks though. Food was also decent, I had poutine and fried egg sandwich (I don't eat meat). I'm considering packing my own food from the next time just to save some time and not worry about finding a place to eat.

The overall highlight for me was the Southwood Rd. The first 5 km or so is broken, the second repaved part is just wow. Great fun. I wish they repaved the entire stretch. It's one of those roads where you actually got to change gears and use brakes.

Also loved the McDougall-Waubamik stretch and the 632 coming down south on my way back.

Stopped by Severn Bridge Bra fence lol. When I saw it on the map, I was curious to check it out. Just some happy bras hanging on a fence and enjoying the sun...something like this

Looks like we swapped routes lol. I did the Bunny trail yesterday.

I'm now very much used to motorcyclists overtaking me in the same lane lol. Had two of them do that yest, one on a hayabusa and the other one I forgot. Actually, the hayabusa and I ended up in the same gas station, shell at Innisfil. I was sore as hell from the ride tbh so didn't go and exchange words.

Took this route roughly, not the longest ride but nice, after chippawa the niagara parkway isnt chokeful of tourists, and you have 20kms of road that is scenic with the falls/river/lake, lots of nice long sweeping corners with a good view and a nice breeze

Loads of bikes/boats/classic cars everywhere, felt like I was in florida

Was hoping to check out the abino lighthouse, but apparently its not accessible(by land), the road is private and they wont let you in

Would have taken scenic pictures but every time I see a nice road I always forget

Nice ride! We did an almost similar route in the 3rd week of May.

I have been trying to get to that Lighthouse for 2 years, out side of COVID, yeah it's a private road, but they will let you walk to it, within certain hours, But I always show up at the wrong time... 🙄

What an awesome weekend. Hit up some of my favourites this weekend. Southwood Rd - Kushog Lake Rd - Bobcaygeon Rd - Deep Bay Rd.

Anyone recognize this?

Spent time there as an Army Cadet in the 70's. Shooting old enfields and newer FN's.

"Newer" FN's..? Lol

My issued FN in the mid 80's was built in 1954... I don't think anyone in my company had any rifle newer than perhaps 1965 vintage.
That said... 'Great weapon. 'Should have bought one before they went prohibited.
I have a couple friends who still own them... Flashbacks to fun times whenever I get to fondle one.

Hwy 35, right? I wonder how long since that station was operational. I don't remember seeing a Cango gas station anywhere else.

Ah yesterday was a another gorgeous day for a ride. After stopping in to see the folks I headed out.

The main road I wanted to hit was HWY 17 along Pigeon Lake, nice and not so busy. I wanted to go across Bridgenorth but made a wrong turn. So I was still curious to see how far I could get with the late start and headed over to Trenton and Belleville. My interest here was the bridge from Belleville over to Prince Edward, the bridge wasn't anything to look at architecturally, just your typical Canadian functional bridge. The ride along HWY 3 to Brighton was nice though.
