Who's dreaming up something big for next year?

ThermaCell is a life saver thing for bugs. I bring it on all my big rides - it takes some time to heat up once you stop and light it but then it works it's magic.

A good old fashioned hat-net is also a low tech fix to keep them out of your face and ears etc. I can deal with bugs elsewhere with deet repellents and just plain covering up and such, but it drives me batty having them buzz my head constantly, fly into my ears, etc. The head screen thing is a simple low tech solution. Yeah, you look like a goofball, but meh...

i bathe in deet, no problemo. Know anyone i can speak to about a rash?

I won't say a whole lot except that I have a lot of first hand knowledge.

Being a strong and firm advocate, and not being afraid to become the squeaky wheel that gets greased is the path to follow. And don't be afraid to politely go over peoples heads if you don't feel like your needs are being met.
Having a passionate and tough advocate is necessary if you want to get the most from any gov't system. They are not proactive, they offer reasonable care when present, problem is they don't really care about the big picture.

It also depends on where you live. My elderly parents are in a community where care is excellent. They get regular physio therapy, mental training, all kinds of community engagement programs thru their LHIN and it's not too hard. They have connections in the medical community, that's also helpful as they get assistance navigating.

I had nothing but praise for the system 7 years ago when my Mom needed help. Same for my Dad 10 years ago.
The Ford cutbacks have really hurt the system. My wife spent 2 months in Freeport hospital last year. She still suffers from the experience. If i told you the details, you wouldn't believe me.
As you get older, you get more viewpoints into the system. From what I have seen, there is a distinct difference between the care depending on where you live. My kids lived in Guelph for about 5 years each, both were provincial level athletes. Sports therapy and rehab services available near Guelph were third world compared to what was available in Toronto. Same with maxillofacial. My kids had to be 'repaired' in Toronto after interactions with country bumpkins in the greater Guelph area. Wouldn't be scary if it was a one-off -- but 3 out of 3 is a strike-out.

I laughed at the thing when I first saw it - another gimmick in my Christmas stocking.

I was besieged by black flies while camping in Marathon ON, as a hail Mary I pulled the thing out of my pack and sparked it up. It was magical, just left it on the picnic table and it made a bug free barrier for about 6' in all directions. I won't leave home without one.

I'm off to goggle thermocell. I'm ok with the hat/mask - hell I'll even sip beer through the mesh but some of the guys I travel are no where near as tolerant

There are different variants depending on how much are you want to protect, the smallest clips to you coat, the larger ones look like lanterns. Work really well in calm conditions, no bueno if it's windy.

There’s usually a sale at Canadian Tire at some point. I think mine was 40% off.

Anyone been to Tuk? There's chatter about it as a destination. Some want to ride all the way , as they should, but I don't have time so we're thinking about trailering to Yellowknife or there abouts.
I don't get it. How will trailering to Yellowknife save time? Someone else will trailer and you'll fly in?

BTW, Yellowknife is really out of the way and will add much time and mileage to the trip. Better to start off in, for instance, Grande Prairie, AB, or Dawson Creek, BC, something like that.

Did you check out pebble beach when you were there?

I'd trailer with a buddy and tag team the driving. The full ride plan would be a week to the trailhead (not sure if it's Yellowknife Whitehorse or ??) 3 days to Tuk. Rest day. Three days back to wherever and then a week back. 3 weeks total. The trailer plan is three days out to the TH. A week up and back and then three days home, shaving a week off the full ride version.

Right, that makes sense. And yes, you're thinking of Whitehorse. Yellowknife is quite some distance out of the way. It took me nine days to ride to Whitehorse a few years ago, though I slowed my pace after the prairies.

This ride is a great adventure; don't let the opportunity slip away. You won't regret it.

Yup, it’s a hidden gem of scenery. I think they should rename it “baseball size rock beach”.
Yes it is, only reason I went to Marathon was because I had a client from there, so I was curious to see whats there. Then discovered the beach by accident because I generally like to take a break near the water, very glad I went there!

They're talking a week of 800km days out and back. Two weeks of that might be a bit much for my knees and one hip - they're over half a century old. ( the second hip is less than 2 years old )

I’ll be out in the maritimes this summer after my niece/nephew is born. I’m planning to load the bike in the truck and drive to Charlottetown and leaving it at my Dad’s and then taking the bike over the ferry and getting up to Baddeck and spending the night then doing the Cabot Trail, spending a second night then taking Highway 7 to Halifax to spend time with Family.

Has anyone overnighted on Baddeck? I’m looking for recommendations for a bike friendly and safe hotel or motel.
