Do you know what the word empathy means? I'm thinking you are using the word to describe something else. Empathy is part of ones emotional intelligence - the ability to identify and brand someone else's emotions.

I still like the work hard and prosper ethic. I'm at the tail end of the Boomers it seems. Granted I had the safety net of my parents at the time I was starting a working life.

And just so I'm not generalizing too much (and I am): there have been some boomers I've met that are really cool during my riding life. They're always the ones that don't exhibit the "holier than thou" attitude very common among boomers (which I've also seen here.) But I've also learned that adopting a "holier than thou" attitude and hurling it right back at boomers for work politics tends to pacify the arrogant one, but this breeds a toxic environment.

Firstly can you define what you're calling a 'boomer'? Because the classic definition has always been the generation born between 1946 and 1960. Try to remember it was developed as target marketing.

As for calling the millennials lazy, it's true, but so was every generation of teenagers and twenty-somethings. And if you want to raid the government bank, go right ahead. Boomers sure didn't think twice about doing it. Vote for the most socialist, self-serving government you can (I'd say Trudeau is it, but Singh is even better but more stupid). Bank's got lots of money folks, go ahead and spend it like you don't have to pay it back.

I've seen all this before and I know where it ends up, but there isn't a person who wants to listen anymore. So...go ahead and let life teach you a lesson. We're already $300Billion in the hole this year, and nobody cares.

That type of supervisor would probably fire those with leadership traits to reduce the competition...

Those who do the best consistent high quality work that are reliable should stay. I would not want to work for a firm that wants mindless zoombies. Kiss the supervisor's ass and work politics is toxic.
 
I often have 6 round holes, and 5 round pegs, one square one. I used to whack that sq peg with a bigger hammer. Now I just sit him down and explain both our lives are short and if he is truely smarter than the room, he should just sit in another room.

An office is like a pail of water and everybody has a hand in the bucket, go ahead smart guy pull your hand out and show me the hole in the water....

Was actually thinking about that book but you beat me to posting it. Good read but I’m sure it’s biased.

thing is that all of us would probably do the same thing. Vote for those that had OUR best interests in mind, choose programs that benefit ours and align with our wants.....nothing new here. The ‘blame boomer’ or ‘ok boomer’ movements are catchy and they actually piss off the targeted group. Mission accomplished.

I was born after the first man on the moon, so not technically a boomer. But I have/had the same outlook on life.

However recently with some of the world events I've realized my generation and the one's before (minus the hippies)never really challenged the way the world turned, just robots working hard to make money. The newer generations do seem to want to make the planet a better place, BLM, defund the police things Enviro friendly etc etc, it's not all about the mighty dollar. I have a new appreciation of the younger folk, and no longer look down on them.

I'm leaving a lot of details out: my manager is on the chopping block. One of the directors already left due to my manager's incompetence. The only awkward part is upper management knows I do not want a management role, so they can't fire him without a replacement but there are bigger fires.

Also, I strongly disagree with the bolded statement. I was one of those, it got me nowhere. Telling them to pay me or I'm ******* off to a FAANG (I've had offers and worked at a FAANG before) got me what I wanted. As someone else mentioned, loyalty and hardwork means nothing. You gotta kick the dog sadly.

I really miss the days of school and even my internships where it really was about "how do we get this **** to work" as opposed to "how do I work the system so I can retire earlier." A similar attitude adjustment happened to a doctor frd of mine. The guy was passionate about helping people but once he actually started working his mentality became "how do I maximize the system" because of how OHIP and other health care systems work.

And my fiancee isn't any different...she's a health care specialist but her entire sector is based on "how many units can you sell?" as opposed to "how do we help the impaired?" She hasn't adopted the toxic attitude myself and the doc friend have adopted; she wants to change careers instead. I think this plays a huge role in why there's hatred growing too.

And yes, I do know what empathy means. I'm able to read and absorb other's emotions very well due to how I was raised. Turning that off and running on pure pragmatism seems to work better as being empathetic gets you taken advantage by those who lack conscientiousness and self awareness.

Wow, what an interesting discussion. I'm a millennial and I don't really get why people have strong feelings towards generations. There are extreme cases in all generations and they are always much more visible. The one thing my parents (btw boomers) told me is that I need to take responsibility for my life and my actions and no one owes me anything. You've got a boss who doesn't want to listen to you? Then you can solve this issue. Just force him to listen to you, go around him and make sure that the decision is right, change the job or just forget about it. There are always options. Btw, these "boss" issues are not generation specific. I know quite a few examples when e.g. millennials were as bad at managing people and making bad business decisions like any other generation.

Everyone needs "soft skills" in order to effectively communicate. 2 people from the same generation can be very different just based on their life experience/psycho type. Just find a way to deal with people and get your priorities straight.

Yes, it's true that different generations have a little bit different priorities/thinking and that's normal. They grew up in a very different world. However, I prefer to think about each person as an individual and find the right approach in each case.

You know, my 3 yo daughter has a very different life experience in comparison with me. Just look at the amount of technology around us. And I'm sure at some point in her life she will think that I'm a dinosaur because I will not get some new concept or will not like/follow new world order/trends. And that's totally fine. I hope she will grow up as a smart person and will not blame millennials but just find a way to resolve the issue.

CWW was on Dundas Street near Kipling. Big building and lots of bikes. IIRC they went belly up and no severance money for the staff. The owner of CWW owned the building in another name so it wasn't part of the assets. I am under the impression a lot of suppliers got stung.
