What should I do with this bike?

Hey Friends,

Long story short.. my sister in law a couple of years ago bought a (I believe) smokey joe CBR 600F3 , think its 1996... It was at the time registered as an unfit bike and went to a mechanic to do a complete overhaul... That bike was re-done from back to front, even had body panels painted and custom windshield and all that cool jazz.... Unfortunately that mechanic took something like a year to fix the damn thing to 100% road worthy condition but at the same time, a law was passed in Ontario that would not allow a bike with a restored frame or something to be registered legally. So basically if he finished a month earlier, we could of registered that bike and be happily riding it... but now it was too late and we can't register the bike for On road use (Unless you completely replace the frame)

So, basically the bike is all fixed up, but sitting in my brother in laws' garage for the past 2 years.

What options are good for this type of situation? I was going to recommend either selling it for parts, or as a racebike... It would still run well on the track, so why not? I am not sure how much a bike like this would cost... Any recommendations would be appreciated!

It looks like this but its painted matte black with a red windshield and red grips.

UNFIT is changeable to FIT by getting a safety.

going from IRR to FIT is not doable.

Check again what the ownership says

I just got clarification... Apparently the bike has a "Salvaged" title and was completely restored and was about to be re-registered again with the ministry up until that one faithful day when they said they will not register any bike that has a salvage title.
 
I just found this on the MTO website

3. How can I change the brand on my vehicle from "Salvage" to "Rebuilt"?The vehicle must have successfully passed an inspection in accordance with the requirements in Ontario's Regulation 611 of the HTA and have been issued a Structural Inspection Certificate (SIC). The owner must then submit the SIC and registration permit to a Ministry of Transportation licensing office. Once accepted and approved, the "Salvage" brand will be changed to "Rebuilt". This process helps ensure that damaged vehicles are repaired to meet minimum prescribed standards before being allowed back on the road.


Ok so it looks like you can re-register a bike that has been rebuilt but I am curious as to who does the Structural Inspection Certificate? Is that something a dealership can do or any mechanic?

Unfortunately for you, I don't believe that bikes are included in the above.
 
Ah, found it:

"Vehicles branded as "Irreparable" can never be driven on Ontario's roads and can only be used for parts or scrap. For motorcycles, only the "Irreparable" brand will apply."

"** Motorcycles are included under the "Irreparable" category where there is frame damage requiring replacement. Motorcycles are susceptible to fraudulent registration much more readily than an automobile. Requiring an "Irreparable" brand to be affixed to heavily damaged motorcycles will allow for tracking of resale parts. This will assist law enforcement agencies to reduce motorcycle theft or the laundering of stolen motorcycle parts."
 
OR buy a crashed bike with a clean title and clean frame and transfer all your stuff over...

or (not that i'm suggesting it since of legal issues) you could buy a clean title and register that and just change the vin on your frame...
 
Thats unfortunate! The bike is in great shape...

Alright I guess the next question is what kind of prices do track bikes go for? What would be a reasonable offer for a bike like this?
 
Ahhh CBR F3 .. my first bike. What a fun bike ..

It could be swapped to a beginner track bike, and even run Lost era in SOAR>

Hold on a sec, what if the bike was titled "Salvage" BEFORE the law prevented that status from being applied to bikes? I would think that it would carry the "Salvage" title through to today and can be certified fit for the road, if the law only states that it's "Irreparable" bikes that can't be made roadworthy.

Im checking on that right now but I wonder if you're right.. if it does have a SALVAGE title instead of IRR maybe it can still work out? Hmm
 
I'd buy it as a stunt bike if I had a truck to haul it around.
 
Throw a race fairing on it and use it as a track bike and sell the street fairings assuming there's a market for them and if it's a win win $wise.

Or just sell it as a track only bike.

This would work if the fairings in the pic were the ones on the bike.
I bet it would cost the same for race fairings as you would get for a set of Matte black fairings.
 
Yep, part it out. You'll make the most money that way.

I am looking for a complete front end intact: forks, triples, tire, rim, disks, brakes, fender. :)
