The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Just proves being wealthy doesn't = having good taste.

I don’t mind it aside from a couple of things. What’s the big deal about pressing a button to record the goals? That seems dumb.

Second Q is the watch seems over complicated comparing it to other watches that do similar things. Or is that the point?

I saw recently that Richard Mille is estimated to be the 6th largest Swiss watch brand by revenue, at around 1.7B Swiss Francs, or about $3B CAD. They have by far the highest average revenue per watch at almost $500,000/ea CAD, which is roughly double the next most expensive brand. Only the heavy hitters like Rolex, AP, Patek, Omega and Cartier are bigger by annual revenue, and Richard Mille are bigger than both Seiko and Citizen by a fair margin.

I don't get it under any circumstances, but obviously people with cash to burn do...

Cool but spending $30k on a mantle clock is steep for me.

Mike from This Watch, That Watch has had issues with all of his JLCs. Just sayin'.

My boss got an omega speedmaster professional as a parting gift , within a month the hands fell off and the crown had to be replaced. We bought four , one for each leaving partner , other three have been great but one was assembled after a long weekend .

For that coin I'd be demanding a replacement, not a repair.......to see it needing more repairs going forward.

The “Saffire sandwich” Omega Speedmasters were just over nine k each with taxes , no discount even though we bought four . They did throw in an Omega umbrella , Oky doky . I’d have been making a bigger stink if it was mine . That’s horrible for a watch of that ‘caliber’ . I’ll offer him three k and a super clone trade next week so the other partners don’t know he sold out .

A year ago they were ninety six hundred at Ashley Jewelers Hamilton , I paid under eight for my Hesalite and almost nine for my sapphire . They have jumped over three k more in just a year . And since “omega” has learned from Rolex/Tudor , don’t discount anything , the alleged exclusivity keeps the number up.

Cool. A guy in Vancouver is handmaking watches (actual watches, not just cases with purchased movements). As expected, they are pricey ($85k to 115k). He included some tiny Robertson screws as a nod to Canadian history. I wonder if he ships a screwdriver with the watch or if he expects whoever touches it to make their own?

Edit:
Another article with better pics.

I'm a big Omega fan , I sold a speedmaster when the omega/ Moonsiers nonsense started, then felt bad and aquired another . I'm in the process of moving them off for Seamasters ( I like waterproof watches) . BUT Omegas price jump is making it hard. 12Gs for a James Bond seamaster is actually stupid. I'm wearing a planet ocean while I type this , its gone up 3K in value since I bought it 5yrs ago. But I need to find another chump like me ....
Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Tag have all decided to see where the top of the market sits , I wonder how they can justify it , then I see the high end shops are "busy"

Luxury items have less to do with value and more to do with exclusivity. High cost reinforces the latter.

Purchased my Speedmaster new in 2015 for $5200. Crazy prices now.

Higher MSRP inflates the value of the used ones and make existing owners happy about the performance of their "investment" too. That may make them more likely to buy more.

For Omega/Breitling/Rolex etc, the exclusivity is weak at best. Making millions of watches per year (Rolex alone is >1.1M/yr) churned out of factories and pretending they are hand crafted by old men with loupes is all fluff. For the most part, they are expensive but not exclusive.

Exclusive in that not everyone has the $ ability to purchase. Scarce? Hell no.
