The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

i picked up a Bulova crono today , the re issue of the 70's race watch, updated to the 2000's . They litteraly call it the racer lol , comes in a funky box with a tiny rubber tire for a stand . MSRP $795 , marked down to $400 . its not really my thing ( not a dive watch) , but it was a nice change of pace . I wear the heck out of it for the summer then move it along .

Stuck my head in, very depressing end-times vibes. Bulova is still $717, and with the thin strap and tall case, I wouldn't have bought it at half that price, as it was about as top-heavy as a bobblehead on my wrist. Bezel action is interesting, but not interesting enough for a watch that tall.

They also had a Tissot diver with a white face and blue bezel that was decent, but a bit anonymous for my taste. Otherwise, zilch. A Hamilton, some fashion watches, not worth a trip back regardless of added discounts...

When I went to the watch show in Toronto last year, kids under 30 vastly outnumbered anyone over 60, that's for sure. Tough to pin down an average age, but I would have guessed around mid-30s?

I'd love to pin it down to just kids rejecting digital disposable goods, but it's also about status symbols. Cars aren't really cool anymore, even EV's, so young men need to find other ways to peacock a bit. Luxury watches are a form of male jewellery that's acceptable for anyone.

When I was at an industry event 'wine and watches' thing put on by a construction materials supplier at L'Oro Jewellers recently, the most expensive watches bought were a couple of Grand Seikos for two kids under 30. Both cost north of $10k. Wise financial planning? Definitely not. More wise than piling $50k+ into a souped up car like kids did in my youth? 50/50, I think.

I like it. Would she wear it? Would having it as communal property help or hinder the relationship? For most people a bright blue watch will not be the everyday choice so two people could probably share it easily.
Apparently she would. She loves it. Bracelet makes it impossible to share. Oh well, I had my chance to keep it. Happy wife and all.

I like it. Question is should I keep for myself or give it to my wife?

How's the finishing? I love how thin the Combat Sub is for a diver, but have been leery about current Glycine because of the Invicta ownership.

The Invicta Pro Diver Sub cloneage isn't a terrible watch, especially for the price. Then again, it isn't rocket surgery spec-ing a half decent watch out of China.

For a watch I paid $650 for I'm not at all bothered about who owns the company. Finish is quite good. I'd say better than your average Seiko. Nice heft as well. I'm not sure what retail price is. Guess I should have checked before I purchased.

Where did you find a Glycine dealer ? Not too common here. It’s taking me a while to get into the pale blues , pastel reds and yellows but they do look good . Nice watch .

Got from the original owner who imported it. February 2025 watch. The blue makes for a great summer watch.

GL0540 (39mm)? MSRP 1400 CHF (~$2300 CDN). Actual sales prices ~650USD. Looks like you got a good deal. Looks like Glycine follows the invicta pricing model with decent watches at the actual sale prices but nobody should buy them at MSRP. MSRP is just a marketing game to increase perceived value.

I was interested in a Sideral last fall and no one was moving anything worth mentioning on MSRP. Even now almost 2 years in since releasing them the only vendor moving any more than 10% is Amazon (through Tissot's own Amazon store, ironically).

Yes, thats the model. Wears larger than 39mm. 42mm is the sweet spot for me.

Today is Liquidator Day at HBC. Might be interesting to see what the BURL location has the MIL SHIPS and MR-G marked down to.
I went to a couple of HBCs when they started liquidation to see if they had any high end G-Shocks marked down. Didn't see anything better than the 25-40% discounts that were regularly offered (although, I think only for watches less than $500?). Were there ever any decent deals on MR-Gs?

I have several "nice" watches including a Patek.

The watches I actually wear are my G-shocks. I actually went into a rabbit hole for a while which ended when I needed to buy a case to house them all. My favourite of those is one of the cheapest - the 5160. I wasn't crazy about it when I first got it, but the more I wear that watch, the more it feels just right. I could wear the 5610 in any situation. In my mind a watch with a battery is only worth so much, but I would have seriously considered a MR-G 5610 at the right discount.

I love how Gs can be so utilitarian, and yet so fun at the same time.
