The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I went to a couple of HBCs when they started liquidation to see if they had any high end G-Shocks marked down. Didn't see anything better than the 25-40% discounts that were regularly offered (although, I think only for watches less than $500?). Were there ever any decent deals on MR-Gs?

There was one in the case at the Burlington store. Didn't check the model and the price was just south of $2K.

The watches I actually wear are my G-shocks. I actually went into a rabbit hole for a while which ended when I needed to buy a case to house them all. My favourite of those is one of the cheapest - the 5160. I wasn't crazy about it when I first got it, but the more I wear that watch, the more it feels just right. I could wear the 5610 in any situation. In my mind a watch with a battery is only worth so much, but I would have seriously considered a MR-G 5610 at the right discount.

I love how Gs can be so utilitarian, and yet so fun at the same time.

I have a bunch of them. Good work watches. There's a big sub group of people modding G-Shocks (and Seikos). The big US company for Gs is SKX MODS. I think SKX has their stuff made offshore and is unsigned. Ali has signed stuff. They make metal kits in SS and Ti for both the 5600 and 5610 to replicate GMW-5600/MR-G.

Fortunately, I was able to avoid the modding rabbit hole. Out of that , I might never have emerged.

When you have more money into a seiko than a Patek you know your life has taken a wrong turn.

There are a bunch of people selling modded Seikos (offshore parts + OEM NH movements on Marketplace in the $250-350 range. Hardly Patek money.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek. Obviously there are affordable mods but if you really went down the rabbit hole (like a custom one-off case in precious metal), you could spend a fortune.

For a watch I paid $650 for I'm not at all bothered about who owns the company. Finish is quite good. I'd say better than your average Seiko. Nice heft as well. I'm not sure what retail price is. Guess I should have checked before I purchased.
Good to know. Not fussed about Invicta ownership from a snobbery standpoint, I have been more concerned about junk with a historic name glued to the dial with Glycine because I've never been able to see one in person. Glad to hear it's respectably finished and good value. Will keep my eyes peeled for one, as some models of the Combat Sub are among the thinnest (reasonably priced) traditional divers I know of, at least according to the spec sheet...
