The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

i picked up a Bulova crono today , the re issue of the 70's race watch, updated to the 2000's . They litteraly call it the racer lol , comes in a funky box with a tiny rubber tire for a stand . MSRP $795 , marked down to $400 . its not really my thing ( not a dive watch) , but it was a nice change of pace . I wear the heck out of it for the summer then move it along .

Stuck my head in, very depressing end-times vibes. Bulova is still $717, and with the thin strap and tall case, I wouldn't have bought it at half that price, as it was about as top-heavy as a bobblehead on my wrist. Bezel action is interesting, but not interesting enough for a watch that tall.

They also had a Tissot diver with a white face and blue bezel that was decent, but a bit anonymous for my taste. Otherwise, zilch. A Hamilton, some fashion watches, not worth a trip back regardless of added discounts...

When I went to the watch show in Toronto last year, kids under 30 vastly outnumbered anyone over 60, that's for sure. Tough to pin down an average age, but I would have guessed around mid-30s?

I'd love to pin it down to just kids rejecting digital disposable goods, but it's also about status symbols. Cars aren't really cool anymore, even EV's, so young men need to find other ways to peacock a bit. Luxury watches are a form of male jewellery that's acceptable for anyone.

When I was at an industry event 'wine and watches' thing put on by a construction materials supplier at L'Oro Jewellers recently, the most expensive watches bought were a couple of Grand Seikos for two kids under 30. Both cost north of $10k. Wise financial planning? Definitely not. More wise than piling $50k+ into a souped up car like kids did in my youth? 50/50, I think.
