Scarborough shooting

meh, black ppl problems?

Someone had to say it.

That attitude is why she is dead and it could easily be you, your friend, your family member.
If you had a serial arsonist running around the city, you will wonder could my house be next.
We have a growing problem and clearly the Border Security and Police are weak.
There will be more, just hope that you don't catch that bullet.

Bystander victims outside of the gang community are very rare but they get much more media attention. I don't walk out my door worrying if I or anyone I know will get shot since I don't associate with that lifestyle.

Retro, you usually have very good and insightful points but this time you missed the mark.

I guess this guy having ice cream watching the soccer game must have deserved it then. We should consider ourselves lucky that he was a good shot killing the other guy right away vs. having a shoot out.

Mr. Raposo was gunned down during a Euro 2012 soccer match between Italy and Ireland while he was sitting on the patio of the Sicilian Sidewalk Café. Police had said he was a targeted victim in a shooting during which another person, an innocent bystander, was wounded by a stray bullet.

Constantly throwing money at social programs is not going to solve gun violence. It's not the city's job to act as a surrogate father to potential gangsters, which is the root of the problem.

There's a community center, baseball diamonds, hockey arena and library less than 50 yards from where the BBQ took place.
There's 43 division less than 200 yards from where this occurred.
So like Retro said, only so much you can do.

Anyone familiar with the area knows that there is good and bad with everything, and there is a lot of low-income, co-op housing, single-parent family dwellings in the area. Drive a couple km's south and you have million dollar homes.

It all starts in the home; parenting. Until they get their heads on right, this will continue to happen.

IV, you have a "sky is falling" reaction. If you really look at all the innocent shooting victims that are in no way associated with gangs, the number is insignificant. I have a better chance of scoring a date with Angelina Jolie than getting shot.

The answer is obvious, hire more police and target these communities with a more community style of policing.

Yes and no.
IMO There is plenty of officers in Toronto already.
Hiring even more cannot be done as a knee-jerk reaction to these tragic events

Why is it that when the media shows a grieving parent of a gang shooting victim, it's almost always only the mother?

Because the father in unknown ...

It's not a skin colour problem it's an attitude problem. It's the fact that there will always be people, regardless of skin colour, who decide to live that sort of life. Guns are the weapon of choice these days, years ago it was knives, baseball bats and blackjacks.

I'll stop here before this becomes a diatribe.

On CTV News right now, a West Indian clergyman, Bishop Lennox Walker, clearly states the number one problem with his community is missing fathers. I rest my case.

The Toronto star is currently having a field day with this. They're bringing in specialists, following around TPS and reporting on EVERYTHING.

I think you would have stopped sooner if you think of the audience on this forum "Yo kool gixxer bro."

Compared to white people dis-membering asian people and getting away with it? What about white folks bombing poor brown folks? Or white folk inslaving people of colour? What about the white folks coming to North America and murdering 55 million native Americans for the land?

I don't think we have a black problem. Opps...I better stop before I get banned.

Yeah, people willing to commit murder and don't care about how many innocent civilians they injure or kill will comply with the municipal gun/bullet ban.. This brings us back to our old mayor..

What we need is a combination of taking our economy in a different direction, so fewer people are desperate enough not to see opportunities in having lawful employment, proper education (including better access to extra-curricular activities - athletic/academic/artistic) for the kids and meaningful sentences for the gangbangers.
Now THAT'S a bullseye if I've ever seen one!

More gun laws only impact the law-abiding citizens. Stricter penalties on gun enforcement only drive up criminal costs and make the crimes more sophisticated.

To be fair, that doesn't happen every week. And how did he "get away with it" exactly? Last I heard, he was in custody.

I blame the bank printing monopoly money

I think its better to say that every background has a particular issue to deal with, face reality everyone....honor killings, child molestation, serial killing, gangster life. The bottom line is that the people in charge of our safety constantly drop the ball when it comes to protecting us! The mentality of our government when a man is mugged is "Why was he there to get mugged?" Ive lived in areas of scarborough growing up since my family moved here in the 70's. I went from Gilder, to Trudelle, Orton Park, a little bit in the west in Jungle. I came out just fine and have my family with me in Ajax, so please refrain from that "I didnt have a daddy so Im gonna be gangsta" crap. I dont GAF what reverend u saw on TV saying that crap, hes out there for camera time like all these other public figures, how much credence do u give to Al Sharpton when he talks? Trust me black people give him none. The problem is that alot of people existence is justified by this violence, so no one does nothing to stem it. How could the police beg for more cops on the street if everything was good. There a questionable cops who are supplying these guns to the kids on the street. (Sgt. Wong I believe his name is as an example, arrested by another force in possession of illegal handguns) and for those who say its about gangs and drugs, who do you suppose is making up the majority of drug sales.....the kids and parents from the 'burbs. Ya i can see u saying poor parenting is a factor in making these kids more suseptable to influence by older gangsters who need these kids to avoid being charged themselves, but its is not the major factor in this, not even the need for outreach and baseball and blah blah blah. Scrap the YOA, put five years on each bullet in the gun, ten for every fired bullet and an automatic ten for having the gun in the first place. Our government needs to be held by the shoulders and shaken violently, theyre too busy protecting diddlers and wannabe gangsters to care about average joe and jane's right to live peacefully. Establish that our problem starts at the top and u begin to create a solution.
