WTF is a commander..?

I heard this 3 or 4 times on the cbc
They referrered to a plot to murder a "unit commander" at the Toronto South Detention Centre"

"Unit commander" or "commander", isn't a thing.
It is a formal title, separate from rank.

It's akin to military jargon of there being a commanding officer or CO. Even though this can range from full colonel to say lieutenant it is separate from rank.

Toronto Police involved on behalf of YRP . It maybe has a chance. 7 guys , one from the Guns and Gangs squad. The organized crime , corruption , interfearance with an open investigation , collution and gun charges can all be explained away as "deep undercover" . The couple of hits on competitors ( it might be ok to call it murder) could be a bit harder to dodge if proven they were involved or had knowledge of that .
They just need to get a charter violation or failure to prove beyond a reasonable doubt and promotions for all.

"Commander" is not a title within the MCS.
We have:

Correctional officers,
Rehab officers
Rec. officers.
Corporals
Staff Sergeants (who can, depending on their role have specific secondary titles of wich "commander" isn't one)
Deputy Superintendents
Superintendents

As GreyGhost said, the media can't be bothered with accuracy...

You've mixed up (some) ranks with titles.

Lol... and you've mixed up the toronto police with the ontario ministry if correctional services...
TSDC is a separate entity ftom the TPS.
We dont share the same structure, or nomenclature.
Walk into any Jail and ask to speak with "the commander" and they'll ask you... "what?"

Are you sure it was not a police officer?

Assigned to the detention center perhaps.

Here are different words from the press briefing. Still clear as mud as they didn't use any of the official titles.

"The investigation began in June 2025 when they allege a conspiracy unfolded to murder a member of corrections management who was working at a Ontario Correctional Institute institution.

“Over a 36-hour period, a number of suspects attended this member’s home in York Region, we allege, for the purpose of murdering him,” said Deputy Chief Brian Hogan."

Thats not a thing...
There are "liasion" (police) officers that are utilized within some larger jails, but they dont have anything to do with the running of the jail.
They exist only because the jail generates so much incident wise it's easier to have an officer assigned than having to call one in every time there's an assault.
They can also act as a resource for us whenever we might need/want their input/advice.

Holy phukk... lol.
Whoever wrote that must have missed a few classes at jornalizm skool.

OCI is a different facility than TSDC....
If they actually meant to say.
"Ontario Correctional Institute"

Or did they mean "working at an Ontario Correctional Institution"..?
What's an "institute institution"..??

Lol..

That was a direct quote from YRP Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan. The best and brightest I tell you. That's why we pay them the big bucks.

It's not illegal to ask. I frequently find this situation gets reported with bias both ways.

And it's not illegal to tell them to GFY, as they don't have a legal mandate (ICE Barbie saying so doesn't make it legal) to ask anyone they want for identification.

They dont need a legal mandate to ask. You can always refuse an request. 😊

You can say GFY and wake up with a headache in a El Paso holding cell , or El Salvador , things are not normal enough to risk anything right now for ANYone .

Unless your Billie Eilish and your mansion is on the stolen ancestral home of the tenga waga tribe , then by all means weigh in . I get most of my political insight from people that sing and dance for a living . And occasionally movie stars and pro wrestlers. The rest comes from you guys . I’m F’d .

Anyone can start a conversation and anyone has a right to walk away. They ask. Then they demand. Then they arrest. That's not the same thing.
