I had grand plans for some long distance travel in the USA this summer. That is, until they became the Infected States of America. Thanks a lot, Covid!

So, where to? Northern Ontario it is! No set plan or schedule, no reservations, four, five, six days, whatever.

This report will be light on the chit chat, heavy on gratuitous bike shots. I set out on my Moto Guzzi V85TT, then met up with my brother, who chose his 2004 BMW R1150GS for this ride. We planned mostly asphalt, and perhaps a bit of gravel. Mon 'n pop motels, maybe some camping.

Packed and ready to go.

We were in no particular hurry, not the least bit interested in one thousand kilometre days. We met a friend for lunch in Barrie, then the skies opened with torrential rain just as we were leaving. It didn't last long, though, and we made our way to Sudbury via Hwy. 69.

First class accommodations in Sudbury. Hey, we're on a budget! I'm sure the woman in the room next to us was a working girl.

IMG-20200722-203839179.jpg

Stunning view from the motel, no extra charge.

Stopped at the famous Sudbury nickel Thursday morning.

IMG-20200723-114711436-HDR.jpg

Then on to the old fire tower lookout in Elliot Lake.

IMG-20200723-122729092-HDR.jpg

Continued on the Deer Trail to Iron Bridge. On the second leg coming south, there was a lot of gravel and a bit of construction. Very picturesque.

IMG-20200723-132719702.jpg

Mosquitoes and black flies were few, but the roads were heavy with butterflies.

Further west on the Trans Canada to Thessalon, then north on 129. The first half, to around Aubrey Falls, is fantastic; twists and turns, up and down, plenty of blind crests. The northern half is new aspalt, wide open, big sweeping curves, and less challenging. Watch out for police along here; we got lucky. Services along 129 are scarce; make sure you have fuel.

Ended the day at the Chapeau Motel. It's a nice, clean, well run place; highly recommended. Our neighbours were a very friendly Italian couple from Sault Ste. Marie. They were riding a Moto Guzzi Norge. How could we not get along?

Up early Friday morning and along the 101 to Wawa. This is another stretch with no fuel; plan ahead.

IMG-20200724-112135700-HDR.jpg

Everyone has seen the giant geese in Wawa. But have you seen the Joy Super Heavy Weight Champion iron ore drilling rig?

After lunch, the plan was to head south on the Trans Canada, then take 556 from Heyden back to Aubrey Falls on 129. About 90km of this road is gravel, from Searchmont to 129.

IMG-20200724-131405005-HDR.jpg

Pit stop at Katherine Cove, along the shores of Superior.

I was going to add another photo of the beach, but enjoy this bike shot instead.

At a fuel stop on the TC (note: only regular grade is available here, there is no premium) between Wawa and SSM, we met up with the happy couple from the motel, where they invited us for dinner at their place! I guess we'll just have to run the 556 another time.

Now well after seven o'clock, we rode east to Bruce Mines and settled down at the local motel.

Disappointed for having missed 556, we checked the map and found a more appealing route, this one a gravel road marked as "private road with public access" on my paper road map. In other words, a logging road. I mentioned this one in another thread. It's 166km from Webbwood to Ramsey. Give yourself about three hours. Be prepared, its very remote. There are no services of any kind. No fuel, no food, no cell service. Nothing other than the occasional logging truck. If you run into trouble, you're entirely on your own.

IMG-20200725-083514180-HDR.jpg

On the road early. We stopped at a Mennonite market in Sowerby.

IMG-20200725-111034838-HDR.jpg

Another stop at the general store in Webbwood, before hitting the gravel.

IMG-20200725-122121697-HDR.jpg

About a third of the way. Wild raspberries at the side of the road. We encountered three cars and two logging trucks the entire way. Perhaps more logging traffic on weekdays? The road is in good shape, plenty wide, a few hazards here and there, occasional washboard. The gravel is coarse and loose, deep in some areas. Keep the speeds reasonable and pay attention, and you won't have any trouble.

Stop number two.

IMG-20200725-144905534-HDR.jpg

Ramsey, Ontario. Nothing more than a sign post. From here, you can travel east on another 50km of gravel to Hwy. 144, or go west towards Sultan, 48km of gravel to ON-667, a paved road which links up with 129. We chose the latter, and wound up back at the Chapleau Motel!

Bustling downtown Ramsey, Ontario.

IMG-20200725-145157661-HDR.jpg

Plenty of dust today. Thankfully, no rain, no mud.

IMG-20200725-173114331-HDR.jpg

A nice reward at the end of a long day.

It's not all fun and games, though. Some work has to be done. Good thing I have an Italian drying rack.

It's Sunday, and we're off to Timmins along the 101. Dark skies and some light rain, but no bother. Arrived in Timmins around noon and carried on. Where to? Continued south on Hwy. 11, stopped for a snooze under some trees in Englehart.

IMG-20200726-141224799-HDR.jpg

The 701 steam engine, retired from service in 1957, rests in Englehart.

IMG-20200726-163629511-HDR.jpg

Keeping with the theme, here is the train station in Temagami. By the way, there is a beautiful marina and rest area here.

IMG-20200726-183900816.jpg

Time to man up and pitch the tents! Marten River Provincial Park.

IMG-20200726-183925438.jpg

It's a fine park with all the amenities one would expect. Light rain for most of the night, but we kept warm and dry.

Monday morning we aimed for home. A McBreakfest in North Bay, then further south on Hwy. 11. Harry also found us a few squiggly roads as well as some good gravel.

map-2.jpg

The route. Take a closer look here: Toronto to Dixie Rd

So, five nights out, about 2800km, roughly 500km per day. It was a nice pace, never rushed, we never had to be anywhere at a specific time. Motels were never a problem, I saw vacancies everywhere. Food choices are still limited, though. Mostly fast food, chip trucks, etc. There are a variety of selections in Chapleau. We were fortunate to have good weather; we missed the oppressive heat of Toronto, and only had a bit of rain. Perfect.

Ontario is an immensely vast province, so many roads to ride. Get out there!

Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing. (y)
New ride treating you well?

wouldnt happen to have any pics of the working girl by any chance?

For research purposes...

Awesome. Thoughts on Chapleau, and the hotel? Restaurant suggestion? Headed up there in 2 weeks with a few friends as part of a loop we're doing. Pretty slow pace, 400ish KM a day. We're booked at the Chapleau motel as well.

I'm particularly looking forward to 129S out of Chapleau.

Try Grumpy's chip truck or the Dominion Family Restaurant. No sit down yet, but they'll deliver. There's also a Subway. All within walking distance of the motel.

Did you happen to notice if there was a communal BBQ at the motel?

I’m heading to Timmins on the 15th, probably 11 northbound and 144 southbound. On a mission so it’s gonna be 2 days of 750 km. Looking for a couple of interesting dining and rest stops.

I just did home -> thunder bay -> timmins -> home over the long weekend. Rode some of the roads you did, eg 101 from wawa to timmins.

Are those mom and pop motels cheaper than the chain motels? I usually stay at 2 star motels like the comfort inn, super 8, etc and they are a lot cheaper this year than they were last year, around $100 + tax per night, I guess they're not getting as many customers.

By the way, if you're going from sudbury to ss marie, a nice break from the monotony of the 17 is to take highway 638. It goes north from 17 then back out to 17 but doesn't add much if any extra mileage, it is a very nice ride, reminded me of hwy 518.

Instead of the 11, you could take quebec hwy 101 which runs parallel to the 11 for a while but is much more scenic. I found the north bay to timmins section of 11 to be very boring.

Thanks - never been on the 638 before and looking forward to checking this one out!
