Spotted at least three times: E-bikes riding down the middle of the road in the dark. No headlights. Nice.

Keep your eyes double-peeled, folks.

They're also wheezing by the pedestrian bridge across Portland St in CityPlace.

Pot-smoking hippies, the lot of them.

At least they're not posers.

Do you mean down the middle of a lane, or down the middle of the centreline?

That's where I saw tonight's adventurer, on Front Street. Not quite ON the centreline, but pretty close. Only seen momentarily as she (?) partially blocked the headlights of the traffic behind her. No posing in this weather, inreb, just straight up daredevil!

Next up? Woman wobbling along on a bicycle with toddler sitting on handlebars, maybe 2 years old. No helmet, probably don't make them that small. Also, the occasional person walking in the middle of the lane, on cellphone, dressed in black, daring me to hit them when honked at.

Stup(or)endous!

When I see pedestrians get hit on the news, I don't say Oh man what bad judgment. Instead I can't help thinking "who's the idiot?"

I've seen babies in those seats that bolt to the back of bicycles with helmets and they were smaller and younger than 2.

Technically riding an ebike with no light is illegal since even riding a bicycle with no light (or functional bell/horn) is illegal. Half the cars I see in the dark in Toronto don't have their proper lighting system on. If it's not enforced for cars why would it be enforced for bikes? I see a lot of motorcycles in the summer with no lights, too.

I think "Darwin at work".. In most cases those collisions are caused by an idiot pedestrian. Some of my pet peeves:

1) Walking down the middle of the road (bonus points for dark clothes)
2) Walking down the side of the road instead of using the sidewalk (bonus points for dark clothes)
3) Jaywalking (bonus points for dark clothes)
4) Crossing when the red pedestrian light is already flashing (that's where I brake close and blast the Nautilus)
5) Entire extended family spread out across the middle of the parking aisle, waddling slowly

Unfortunately most times the pedestrian gets massively injured or killed for their stupidity. However, it's the car drive that is the one that ends up paying for a MUCH longer time!

I believe one of the members here got sued for a huge amount of money because he killed a pedestrian in a lawyer happy family and the case dragged through the courts for a while. Can't remember the specifics though.

But yes I agree, pedestrians / cyclists feel like they own the road and the hell with cars. It's like they're daring us to hit them because they know there's a payout at the end, or sometimes they're just a bunch of idiots that cannot for the life of them fathom anything bad happening...."won't happen to me" - famous last words!

Saw one of those ebikes yesterday blow by red light without even stopping. He was in the right lane on the road.

mimico polak: That's definitely a big concern on the daily commute--no interest in meeting anyone, their lawyer or the constabulary. I make an effort to rein in the traffic-jam impatience we all feel (and boy, the core is BAD) and slow the heck down when the old Spidey Sense starts tingling.

Oddly enough, children and dogs (even strays) are the most sensible of the lot.

Problem is when one of those idiots gets hit and die, they will come up with new restrictive laws for motorcycles

I see this several times a day by both ebikes and cyclists. Pretty much every time I see them they are running a red or stop sign.

Yeah, hippy leftists, not like a nice Conservative would drink a mickey of vodka with Gatorade in two minutes and go for a drive. Nooooo....but, in his defence, he was likely on crack.

Oh, I get it, you think because these are electric bikes, the riders must be highly educated leftist environmentalists?

Those guys are on bicycles.

These eScooters are bought because they are cheap, and don't require a licence. Ontario had this same problem with mopeds in the 80s, the solution was to call mopeds motorcycles and require licence and insurance. This is already in the works at the MTO.

The e-bike people are overwhelmingly granola/anti-establishment/gluten-free types that work for fluff non-profits. They buy into a lifestyle, just like the rest of us.
