Facebook friend requests from strangers.

I'm not big on FB but use it to keep up with distant friends. I understand the friend of a friend bit but wonder about getting a friend request from someone I don't know. Is this just a FB matchup attempt, is someone looking for a pen pal, or is it a scam? I suspect the latter.

Any experiences?

Scam! If you haven’t set your privacy settings your new “friend” gets all your personal info.

Could be scam, you be misclick (fb added one click add to friends list), could be someone that still believes that more people on your list equal better. If I don't know them, they get rejected.

I love FB!
So many hot women send me friend requests!
They are just lonely and find me attractive!
This is the best thing ever!

:/

I don't share anything personal on FB
And my IG is set to private.
You can also turn off the friend of a friend suggestions iirc

Funny story:

Years ago we got my dad a Chromebook.
Set him up with FB so he could keep in touch with friends and family back home.
He was having some trouble with his Chromebook so my son was checking everything out.
I went through his FB and said that I think I found the problem....he was "friends" with a dozen or so Italian porn stars!
I was about to explain the problem to him when my brother stopped me...he actually IS FB friends with them.
Unbeknownst to me, my namesake first cousin in Italy is married to an Italian porn star and her friends and my dad correspond.
I was never so jealous and proud of my dad.

Your dad should run for PM of italy

People don't get squat until you confirm them as a friend.

Which is the thing you don't do.

My personal policy on FB is that if I've never sat and had a beer or coffee with you in person, sorry, nothing personal, but we're not going to be friends on Facebook as I share some content there that is strictly for my personal friends eyes only, although I keep it pretty tightly curated and am not the type of person that has to share every single life event ad naseum, or feels the need to overshare about personal crap that need never be on social media to begin with, I do share stuff there that isn't for strangers.

As for random strangers sending friend requests, it's been my observation over the years that some are mistakes (there's another person by my exact same name in the area so people think I'm him), or are just spambots. In short, unless I recognize the person and have had the aforementioned coffee/beer, it's an instant decline from me.

Usually you can check out some details of the friend request's profile. If you see they just joined FB a week ago and updated their profile photo a few days ago and it is the only photo. Do not accept.

Now if you see some more normal details, like lots of photos, not generic stuff, and normal posts, it's your call. I've accepted some random people's requests from different parts of the world, and I find it interesting to see what they are up to and what their world is like.

After the world returns to some semblance of normalcy, I have an open invitation to New Zealand and a tour guide there, because of this.

I don't have anything personal on my FB page, there's more personal stuff on the blog. So I'm pretty open about accepting friend requests from people we've met just briefly on our travels.

This means that my newsfeed is full of content and languages from all corners of the world. Very interesting reading. Seeing what people think and feel about global events, you realize that there are definitely localized opinions and prejudices. Also, thank God for the "translate to English" option!

What this also means is that FB is about 3-6 months behind where we really are, which throws off their ad targeting algos. When we were in SE Asia, we were getting ads for Eastern Europe. When we were in Africa, we were getting ads for Japan...

I kinda like that...

So that means that there were sexy singles that wanted to meet him? Frak....I always reject that ad.

As for FB I’ve migrated more and more away from it. It’s just more of the same:

- click here to save this child
- politics
- religion (if you love Jesus you’ll share this image)
- idiocy (how many of you will share this for me)

once those items show up I unfollow the people as I don’t feel like seeing it any longer.

Don't follow people, follow groups.

I'm on tons of groups that I'm actually interested in - motorcycles, travel, etc.

I just unfollow all my friends who post nothing but picture of their cats and babies. Still friends, but they're none the wiser. I'm sure they unfollow me as well after the millionth pic of my last motorcycle ride...

My feelings are hurt. Haven't had any friend requests in a long time.

facebook is like showing up to school in your dads led zepplin T shirt, everyone laughs and knows you're either poor and cant afford clothes or out of touch and have bad taste

So for the most part I avoided it, that being said, I have some friends I havent seen in years, who I like to keep in touch with so Im back on, plus its a great way to stalk your ex gfs/high school crush

Oh ya? Wait till you get a message from a girlfriend from 35 years ago.
Happened to me a few years ago. Scary stuff!

"Dear Penthouse Forum,

I know you won't believe me when I tell you this, but..."
I thought at first that i might be the father of a love child. But she just contacted me out of curiosity. She was a beautiful person. I was a jerk.
