Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

We’ve got some guests coming next year and want to put a door here. Not sure what would be best suited…barn door? Normal door? Curtain? Thoughts?

What is happening behind the vase? Is that a knee wall? For lots of reasons I would put a conventional door hinged near your target. Depending on what is happening behind the vase and that furniture, the door could open all the way and be almost flush against the wall or you could leave it in line with the stairs. That obstacle is preferable to blocking the laundry door on the right.

Keep in mind that closing that door could make a mess of air balance in the house. Make sure that there is a return in the basement (even if you only open it when guests are down there).

Please for the love of god not a sliding barn door.
That is exactly what my wife wants. A sliding barn door.

@GreyGhost those are just shelves not installed yet. No knee wall or anything like that.

There’s a return in the basement already.

Only reason to install anything is when we have guests it allows for some privacy.

Im thinking door too only because you are going to lose some headroom coming down the stairs with a barndoor, either from adding a header for the track or from the ceiling mount track. Also going to have to do something with the crown moulding.

My first thought though...wtf are you shooting at that target???

Anyone using an Ecobee or Nest? I can’t seem to access either unless I’m on the same wifi network in the house.

Whole point Of the nest at the cottage is to turn it on from home so it can warm the place up before we get there.

dont let whoever did the crown mould and baseboard near the door install.
The crown was Kevin. The baseboard was me when we had the water leak.

I use nest from anywhere with no issues. I wanted to use ecobee but it could control less wires so I went with nest.

For those with steep roofs and mature trees...

I made a from the ground eves-trough cleaner. I used 2 inch schedule 20 PVC tube (central vac tubing). A 3 foot section of 2 inch ABS pipe as a slip joint to add the extensions, slips over the PVC tubing. The ABS is long enough that the joint isn't flexy. My shopvac also slides nicely over the PVC tubing. The 135 degree (a 90 plus a 45) was easier to use in 5 inch trough than the two 90s. I made the stops for the slip joint by removing the centre ridge on PVC connectors to slide them over the tubing and then glued them into place.

Easy to use, the schedule 20 is fairly light and so is the ABS. Ours have not been done in a few years...

Roofing is getting more expensive, but a crew is in and gone in a day . Comes with a warranty and the mess leaves with them . You have to really want to save a buck to do that job . Money well spent IMO .

Agreed. I also hate heights though so there's also that. If I could find someone local to string my Christmas lights on the highest peak at my home I would gladly pay them as I hate going up there.

Looks like the decision on the cottage bathroom has been made.

Removal of bathtub, keeping the size, and shifting things around to install a standing shower only.

I'm thinking of either going to the 'ready' shower stalls, or just build up the walls and buying the doors/glass to enclose it myself.

Tiles / floor / etc most of the work will be DIY.

Recommendations on the shower / methodology? I'm 99% that we're tossing the tub...and I know that will affect re-sale, but I don't think that the bathroom will be a deal breaker as the cottage is old and the value is in the land.

EDIT: Something like this is an option also....

I have a similar system made by Stihl that fits on a leaf blower. Wear a raincoat as you will be coated with goo with the blower. Your vacuum solution is much cleaner.

If you want to get fancy, mount a camera with wifi on the elbow and tape your phone to the pipe so you can see where the leaves are.
