What is happening behind the vase? Is that a knee wall? For lots of reasons I would put a conventional door hinged near your target. Depending on what is happening behind the vase and that furniture, the door could open all the way and be almost flush against the wall or you could leave it in line with the stairs. That obstacle is preferable to blocking the laundry door on the right. We’ve got some guests coming next year and want to put a door here. Not sure what would be best suited…barn door? Normal door? Curtain? Thoughts?

That is exactly what my wife wants. A sliding barn door. Please for the love of god not a sliding barn door.
I was thinking door as kids are getting older and MP likes to play video games occasionally. It's nice to be able to close off basement for noise as well as visual.Curtain and expanding stick rod is super easy and cheap. Up only when guests arrive.
