Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

What kind of heater you running in there @nobbie48 as that’s my first plan.

The air seal around the side door blows so that will need to be addressed (felt it was until these stupid cold days).

Need to think of something to make it more bearable as right now can’t even go in there without feeling a bitter cold.

240 volt plug in

Similar to this, 20 ampere circuit is running 100% but rules were meant to be broken.

P.S. Poor seals also allow in critters that chew stuff. I noticed my seals were also leaky.

I have a 6kw electric heater in my garage. I normally only turn it on when I'm in there. During this cold snap, I have left it on but turned down to keep the garage above freezing. Hydro bill is not friendly but not everything in the garage was prepped to be frozen (things like sprayers may not survive if garage freezes). In normal cold weather down to minus 10 or 15, garage stays above freezing.

I’d probably use teak oil , since I have a gallon . You can use linseed oil but be sure it’s boiled not raw ( boiled is not actually boiled in has driers added , raw stays wet for ever) . You could use any finishing oil really . If you get teak oil from CTC in the boat section it has a UV inhibiter in it which is not bad , leaving a book on a teak table in the sun can leave a shadow .

Recommendations on removing multiple layers of water based paint from wood trim?

Told my wife a million times not to paint the trim but she wanted to.

Now she wants the wood underneath to show and to bring it back to that state instead of white paint for all the trim.

FML. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ugh I was afraid of that.

The wood is beautiful underneath so it’s covered in 1 layer of primer, and 2-3 layers of paint.
If the trim is a simple/flat profile, you could get the paint off. If it is detailed, the chance of removing all paint is close to zero. New trim will be much faster. Also, most house trim is craptastic. Redoing it let's you do it properly (coped inside corners, any wall less than a full stick has no joints, etc).

It’s straight and flat. Nothing else.

I’ve got a jointer and a thickness planer at my disposal.

If you take it off the wall, not all will survive R&R. Remove, plane, sand, reinstall will take a long time. I'd use this as an opportunity to upgrade the profile. Personally, I like window trim that has a visual base instead of just a mitred box.

Best way to insulate / hide this exposed wall? Kevin did some repairs and I haven’t seen any water / moisture since we moved in but if we’re updating the laundry the exposed wall is the first thing to be done.

Thinking of gluing 1” rigid foam panels and in between them have a 2x4 for strapping of the drywall.

Not much space so I don’t want to build a full 2x4 frame or insulation with Batt.

Metal z bar and rigid foam. Similar to your idea.

Glue the drywall to the foam will be warmer.

Another quick one for the brain trust here….

Trying to figure a way to secure a vinyl (or similar) banner to an exterior brick wall.

Not sure I can use anchors (banner doesn’t have grommets so could tear it, and owner doesn’t want to drill into the brick.

There’s something there already but I can’t figure out how it was done originally without ripping it off and trying to source what they used.

Would the owner let you put grommets on the banner?

Then brick clips?

Honestly I didn't know I could install grommets into it, and I'm sure they'd be happy with that option. Will have to look into the methodology first to confirm as I don't want to ruin the banner.

They also said they can buy a different banner with grommets...but that just seems wasteful.

How long is the banner supposed to last and how big is it?

What is the risk factor if the banner falls off or flies away?

There are all kinds of tarpaulin clips and clamps on Amazon etc and dozens of other ideas on YouTube. Typically they involve using a small object, maybe a golf-ball, and wrapping the tarp around it, securing the knob with a tywrap. Then a cord can be tied around the knob.

Sew web strapping with loops to the back of the banner?

Attaching to the wall: When I need to temporarily attach something to a brick wall I anchor into the mortar line. Mortar patches are easier to blend in than brick. However they are not as strong.
