2 wrongs don't make it right.Trump's actions already spat in the face of Canadian auto workers, so at that point, what's there to lose? Unemployed because the orange blob pooped is no different from unemployed because we're importing from elsewhere, but at least this way the consumer has better choice.
Do you worry about the Chinese getting a foothold in Canada?
I don’t think it changes anything. Chinese EVs have been coming into Canada for a while. It's interesting, but doesn't this spit in the face of unions in the auto sector, and well not really supporting the Canadian economy more directly. Sure there is a trade off in the deal with lower tariffs elsewhere, but how many jobs does this create at home?
To me this becomes a slippy slope of eventually reducing our auto sector workforce, and jobs.
Time will tell.
I think we still have an auto sector, there were 125,000 workers in Ontario parts and asst plants in 2025.Do we really have an auto sector right now ? Ford hasn’t decided what will be built in the new plant they are building in Oakville . Stellantis is a gong show , Honda and Toyota do what they do . GM has a history of thanks for the money , see you later .
I’m quite happy to see a Chinese EV, I think anything that makes Teslas life harder is a good thing . If they can create some support network for the vehicles , bring it on.
If the Chinese tap my vehicle they will find out I usually spill coffee , listen to XM satellite radio , and type to you guys. . World security is in no danger .

They will likely move their existing unsold inventory first, may be a spell.Tesla used to bring in Ev from China they will probably start doing that again

This is what makes me laugh when people get worked up about Chinese spying. The US tech giants are no less malicious, and have at best rolled over for, and at worst actively aided, Trump at every opportunity. As an Android phone owner, Google could almost literally know everything about me: where I go, what I say, what I buy, the whole package. Anyone who thinks there aren't baked in vulnerabilities is painfully naive. Zero click doesn't come from nowhere. If not directly the Chinese , everyone is collecting your data if you help them . Start using Apple Pay or linking your charge card through an app on your phone , every nickle you spend is analyzed, where and how. Just walk around with the IPhone , somebody knows how many days a week you visit coffee shop x . What the Chinese may learn about me through my driving habits are not what worries me.
All other things aside.... Trump was democratically elected.Considering their ongoing cheerleading for the downfall of democracy in the US, pick your poison...
Not if he has anything to do with it.All other things aside.... Trump was democratically elected.
Don't be talking up China. They *have* threatened us over Arctic sovereignty. What they've done with bullying Thailand and Japan, jailing political critics, surveilling and using social credit to demoralise their society, spying and stealing IP; utilising slavery... I won't hear of any positive words about Chinese government, thanks. Not here, not anywhere. And I don't recall the last time China openly threatened to invade Canada, or posted a picture on social media showing a map of Canada and Venezuela with a Chinese flag over it, or directly threatened Canada at a global forum.
I don't think that word means what you think it means. More voters in the US wanted Trump than didn't. Until he actually stops people from voting for anyone else, he isn't anti-democracy since ALL governments operate like they serve the will of the people, whether they do or not.A democratically elected leader who is far more flagrantly attempting to destabilise Canada and other allies at best, and literally threatening to invade at worst, and is actively undermining democracy around the world seems pretty threatening to me.
Absolutely, we are in agreement here. This puts in a position where we are extremely vulnerable if they don't operate in good faith. Decoupling from that will take ages, and will require cooperation with China, whether we like it or not.
That's only because they are much smarter than trump (as everyone is) and do it on the sly. They've been interfering with our elections for years. And I don't recall the last time China openly threatened to invade Canada, or posted a picture on social media showing a map of Canada and Venezuela with a Chinese flag over it, or directly threatened Canada at a global forum.
That’s no different than a banks behaviour. If not directly the Chinese , everyone is collecting your data if you help them .
