Carney drops tariffs to 6.9% on Chinese EVs

Trump's actions already spat in the face of Canadian auto workers, so at that point, what's there to lose? Unemployed because the orange blob pooped is no different from unemployed because we're importing from elsewhere, but at least this way the consumer has better choice.
2 wrongs don't make it right.

It's interesting, but doesn't this spit in the face of unions in the auto sector, and well not really supporting the Canadian economy more directly. Sure there is a trade off in the deal with lower tariffs elsewhere, but how many jobs does this create at home?
To me this becomes a slippy slope of eventually reducing our auto sector workforce, and jobs.
Time will tell.
I don’t think it changes anything. Chinese EVs have been coming into Canada for a while.

What is a bit scary is there’s no tariffs set for exports above 49000 in their deal. Without a step up rate, any additional cars come in at the 6.1 rate ( MFN for cars. )

As for workforce implications, China hasn’t had trade restrictions until recently, just like their motorcycles, atvs, snowmobiles, etc - consumers aren’t ready and their stuff will need to prove it stands up to the rigours of Canadian roads, weather and dependability expectations.

FWIW, right now both the Japanese and Koreans each send us 250,000 import cars a year, 10x the cars that China can send, those numbers ding our auto sector.
