Carney drops tariffs to 6.9% on Chinese EVs

Carney cut a new EV deal with China, allowing 49,000 cars a year into Canada at a duty rate of 6.9%

Cheaper EVs sound great! The small numbers, about 2.6% of new vehicle sales shouldnt undercut Canadian manufacturers.

Curious what others think. Would you consider a Chinese EV? Do you worry about the Chinese getting a foothold in Canada?

We won't see the super-cheap models. With a limit on the sales volume, they'll focus on the higher-end higher-profit models.

Also, at that sales volume, it's hard to justify setting up a new dealership network, so we'll see brands that already have one.

Polestar ... Volvo ... Mini ... BMW ... maybe GM. I think Stellantis has an affiliated brand in China, though they're in so much trouble with their own brands, I can't see them doing anything about it.

We'll scarcely see a difference.

That's only 2.58% of the total new vehicle sales for 2025 I'm not worried about a foothold. Good if it kicks the other mfgs to start suppling cheaper EV's to the Canadian market. I'm not worried about a foot hold in Canada with those numbers and frankly more variety the better. Even better if they open a mfg plant for sales in the Americas. Reviews from Australia & Europe I've seen have been good for these cars.

EDIT: I would consider one, heck I'll consider almost any EV if the price is right for me.

I think it will be the opposite. This is China we are talking about. They'd love to step on our auto sector.

In return, up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles will be allowed into the Canadian market each year at a 6.1 per cent tariff instead of the current 100 per cent tariff.

By 2030, half of those imported vehicles will cost less than $35,000 -- a measure that Carney said will ensure EVs are more affordable for Canadians.

He added that the 49,000 vehicles roughly equal the number imported from China in 2023, before the tariffs, and account for less than three per cent of the domestic auto market.

I would 100% but one is the price is right and if there’s a way to service it if needed.

Hopefully this forces local manufacturers to actually drop their pricing and make their EVs affordable for the average family, not just GTAM ballers.

It's interesting, but doesn't this spit in the face of unions in the auto sector, and well not really supporting the Canadian economy more directly. Sure there is a trade off in the deal with lower tariffs elsewhere, but how many jobs does this create at home?
To me this becomes a slippy slope of eventually reducing our auto sector workforce, and jobs.
Time will tell.

I don't see vehicles getting much cheaper, you can't pay current labour rates with gold plated pensions and sell for peanuts. A civic is over 40k iirc.

Thats crazy.

Canadians have been treated like Sh&t since beginning of covid by auto dealers that are already here. F' em. I think it's a good play.
Let's remember the Japanese forced the domestic auto makers to complete on quality in the mid 70's. Another player is a good thing for the consumer.
Maybe it will have more of an negative effect on Tesla. That would break my heart.

Not only have the dealers treated customers like ****, but the manufacturers did the same thing.

Every EV rebate just caused the price to go higher because they knew we could now ‘afford it’.

As for the unions and manufacturers….yes this will not hurt them with a 50k limit. But if there’s limit grows there may also be room for improvement and set up manufacturing and a dealer network here.

I’m all for unions and helping members get a fair deal, but let’s not pretend they will squeeze every drop of blood from the company if given the chance, regardless if the company survives or not.

Also, people cry about china subsidizing some of these manufacturers, how’s that different from the provinces and Feds feeding billions to these companies only to get nothing in return?

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Long history of that, too. I seem to recall GM taking an interest-free loan to keep making Camaros in Quebec, but then shuttering the plant not long after and pocketing the money, not paying it off until a few years ago?

These companies have no regard for Canada in any way beyond doing business and choosing the most profitable option, no different to any Japanese or Chinese company...

Trump's actions already spat in the face of Canadian auto workers, so at that point, what's there to lose? Unemployed because the orange blob pooped is no different from unemployed because we're importing from elsewhere, but at least this way the consumer has better choice.

Carney is doing to our manufacturers what Australia did to theirs.
You mean burn them into the ground? Australia had massive tariffs on incoming cars so the big players had their own brands building in Australia is my understanding.

Fact is every single country picks their winners and losers when they do these deals.

Sometimes one wins. Sometimes one loses.

I hope that IF the Chinese brands get a foot in, they’ll open up some plants. Would mean jobs at dealers, parts, manufacturers, etc….but most will likely just ship in from China.

Time will tell.
