You can get same day emergency passports issued. My wife and MIL were due to fly out on Saturday for a 2 week cruise, something was up with the MIL passport so they were refused boarding. They went to Passport Canada (or wherever) this morning, and the new one should be ready for pickup at 2pm. Just food for thought if yours is stuck due to strikes or w/e.
Canada Post tried to force the union to vote/accept their 'final offer', which as far as I can tell was the original offer...all the way back to when this went down. They've pulled all previous considerations. The corporation also asked the government to force the union to vote on it right away, union had been asking for 2 weeks to review it and discuss with union membership. In retaliation the union is now refusing all overtime in lieu of a strike.

Imo, Carney should publicly state that bailouts are over. Maybe give CP an allowance of 100M and tell them to make it work or die trying. I think both sides assume there is unlimited taxpayer money to keep this disaster going.
Not afaik. Technically they announced they were going on strike, waited the required time and then stopped doing overtime. I don't know if an escalation requires another waiting period or if it can just happen overnight. I'm sure there are many in your situation and CP volumes will be much lower than usual. Put a fork in it, it's done. Grenade and relaunch something viable.

The only way the existing system could work would be CP gets exclusive rights in Canada to all items under 10 pounds and the rates are doubled. The couriers will take a poop.
Develop a five to ten year shut down plan going to weekly community boxes.
If cities don't want to accommodate the super boxes, then all mail to city residents gets delivered to city hall for pick up by the addressee.
No one wants reverse progress , however there are still lots of community across Canada where you go to the post office to pick up mail . No rural delivery. We became spoiled with door to door . CP tried to compete with couriers opening priority post and still come up short . Thinking what they do now will work if they get more money ? All the other freight companies seem to be doing alright , it’s head scratching.

The last time CPC was profitable they delivered almost double the number of parcels with 10% fewer staff. I believe that was 2012, and they were the go to carrier for small packages in Canada. They were competitive at the time with low productivity.
Competition saw CPCs poor productivity as an opportunity and began to compete in the prime corridor markets. It was easy pickings as CPC failed to react to shrinking market share.
Competitors are all more productive by huge margins today - even CPCs Purolator is miles ahead of CPC.
Government is sole shareholder... taxpayers will have to clean it up if/when it fails..
CP also used to own a piece of Intelcom.. but had to sell it cause of political reasons. Years later.. Intercom is one of the biggest threats to CP.. and probably stands to gain the most if/when CP fails.
Go to community mailboxes everywhere and service them once or twice a week, increase letter mail rates to cover actual cost and add w/e parcel delivery.
If people don't want to pay the true cost of service then let them find another provider. Why should we all subsidize CP so you can pretend it costs a buck to send a letter from TO to Tuktoyaktuk.

CP, just like USPS in the US, is the "last mile" for mail and many parcels the private sector does not want to touch due to zero or minimal profits.
So charge what it costs to provide service. If the public does not want to pay for to the door parcel service then let them pick up parcels at the P.O. or from a courier depot.
Why do we premise that everyone has a god given right to postal service to their door or to a community mailbox at a subsidized cost. Increase rate to cover costs.
The whole CUPW issue re decades of acquired rights and barriers to changes in how services are to be provided is another challenge CP has to deal with. Obviously this impacts the cost of services provided. CUPW is going to fight all changes tooth and nail.
