Just a quick blurb to say I survived the Amazon Jungle. Back in Quito now for new years, will provide some more content shortly.

Some things I saw on my last nighttime Jungle Walk.

We were deep into the jungle in Venezuela years ago ( when it was just a little crazy ) . The rainforest is quite incredible.

Beautiful pics, really miss Ecuador. Last time was 2005, heard things are diff with drugs and gangs...How are things in Quito and the country side?

There are a few things I can be quite content only ever seeing in an image. You posted a couple of them.
Those two giant spiders are bad enough, and that highly venomous caterpillar is another thing, and you`re out there wandering around in the dark. If you encounter one of those giant foot long, thick as your thumb, Hayabusa fast, centipedes, you must burn the jungle down. And if you find a nest of Bullet Ants, leave that alone too. Did you never see episodes of Deadly 60 or Kings of Pain?

Quito seems fine from what the locals tell me. As always a few spots tourist need to stay out of.

The coast is a different story. People get shot for witnessing the wrong situation to this day.

Enjoy, cool pics. How many of those things want to kill you?
Not everything I posted, but enough that a trip to the hospital or worse is only 1 bad luck situation of rubbing against the wrong leaf.

Guide told me the real issue with tarantula is the spikes. They get agitated and will shoot the spikes on their back, they carry some sorta poison that will start to dissolve your skin iirc. The bite is the ‘good’ part.

You are correct, the spikey caterpillars are extremely dangerous.

In one of those episode of the two shows I mentioned, they were exploring a tide pool and found a tiny blue octopus. Turns out this critter is about the size of a toonie and tags you with a neurotoxin bite that will kill you within seconds. I recall them saying out of the top ten most painful or deadly, the majority were in the oceans. They did an episode with the spider spikes, said they were severely painfully irritating. The giant centipede was a real life horror event, it grabbed a bat in flight, hanging from a cave roof. The show presenter was handling it wearing welders gloves and was hyper aware of the strength and speed of the animal... it`s bite is life threatening.

Marine cone snails terrify me. I've never actually seen one but they inject conotoxin which is game over. Lots of marine things are very bad for you. I used to keep a marine coral that was one of the most toxic in the world too and was concerned about the live rocks I was buying hiding something really bad I didn’t know about (like the cone snails).

I have a bit of an interest thing about venomous and toxic wildlife so on holiday I go out looking for them to photograph. Spiders and scorpions are easy to find as scorpions can show up in uv light and spiders at night reflect back headlamp light really well. The bigger the reflection the bigger the spider and I've found some doozies. The first time I went I was shocked how many there are at night to find and many were pretty close to where I was staying. I've seen the massive millipedes too and those are impressive. Poison arrow frogs are pretty plentiful and easy to find once you've found the first one, the thing is many are tiny things.

Looks fun. Enjoy your trip
