E bikes rampaging Toronto streets

Leaving an e-bike battery out in the sun and (possibly) charging is asking for thermal runaway. I'd bet money that battery isn't UL 2271 certified, which is supposed to greatly reduce or eliminate that chance.

Brad Bradford ranting about "mini-motorcycles" aka DUI mobiles. He wants them licensed and insured. Good luck with that. I don't disagree with his opinion but realistically, insurance is not going to happen. Allowing police to immediately seize bikes in contravention makes sense. That will reduce the fleet quickly as it will cost more to get out of impound than the bike is worth. After someone loses a few thousand in dui mobiles, maybe they will alter their behaviour and stop riding illegally.

Checking for a DUI and laying charges would be a first step. If you have a DUI you cannot operate one of these.

I haven't seen that. If you have a suspended license for a criminal charge (which could happen with a DUI), you can't operate one. If the license is reinstated, I think you can operate anything.

" If a driving prohibition was imposed following conviction under the Criminal Code, that driver cannot legally operate an e-bike. For other types of suspension, this might not be the case – we recommend seeking legal advice before operating an e-bike with a suspended license."

Queensland brought the hammer down on kids.
I saw two kids, seated on the floor of a standup scooter, no gear at all - maybe 6 and 8 years old. Older kid could hardly reach the throttle. Parental supervision definitely needed....they did ride across a proper street crossing on the sidewalk but realllllllly.

I mean, you "ban" them. Don't enforce anything. Have a rise in food delivery while all other costs (esp gas these days) skyrocket.

So people just run to the cheap ali express specials. Even what i ride (e-unicycle) have had some brands with terrible reputations of catching on fire. But now most of them use the same battery cells that have been proven (samsung 50s)
I can't decide if this would be fun or just hurt.

And to drive the point home ....

Waterloo police are getting bored of illegal e-vehicles. After a crash, car driver gets one $110 ticket and e-motorcycle rider gets a ride to the hospital and a handful of tickets worth >$5000.

"As a result of the investigation, the driver of the Toyota was charged with Turn Not in Safety.

An inspection of the e-bike determined it did not comply with provincial regulations regarding motor size and speed capability and was therefore considered a motor vehicle. The rider was subsequently charged with several offences related to licensing, registration, permit and insurance requirements, as well as driving while under suspension."

How about making e bikes / bicycles accountable. Let's talk licensing....a readable registration number on the back of the bike ( small licence plate) NOW you can identify the riders especially the ones that violate the HTA. Once they know they can be identified, I'm thinking they may behave better. And tickets can now affect the eligibility of getting a registration #......just saying....

Saw a kid maybe 13 or 14 on an e-bike with no pedals, not wearing ANY helmet blast through a construction zone within a 40kph school zone going at least 60kph here in Port Hope. The main road in that area is a mess with a local construction company charged with replacing some water pipes (since June) resulting in the sidewalk being removed and traffic lanes being juggled. The little bast**d on the e-bike was riding through a crowd of primary school kids.

Our over-compensated, underworked local police force should swing by the local high school, pick out the offending vehicles and either cut the locks and impound them leaving contact information or wait until the rider starts moving THEN deal with it.

But of course they won't because....effort and active policing would mean they'd have to get out of their cruisers during their shift.

Plates also bring them into ALPR system. Maybe make pedelec plates free, DUI mobile plates something like $100/yr and all the illegal vehicles are classified as the motorcycles they are with full vehicle requirements (back to free plate but insurance required).

That also cleans up the "misunderstanding" (cough, willful ignorance) around e-bike use with a suspended license or driving prohibition.
I can not understand a parent who thinks an e scooter can't cause physical injury.

Then there's the dad riding two up with a six year old in front. In an impact, the 200 pound dad smashes the kid between a stupid person and a hard object.
