Boat Rentals

So the forty two Chris Craft project is over . The engines turn and fire , transmissions tranmit, props go round. Then reality sets in , in water costs are just under 10g a yr . Upholstery estimate was 15k , all electrical needs pulled out , 10k , all electronics are shot, 10k . Interior refit about 25k , exterior refresh 10k . And this is no labour , just materials and bare bones guesses .For a floating liability. And wife did mention we have a couple boats now . My passion for boats probably explains why she bought that house in the desert a couple yrs ago .

I was given some really good advice years ago regarding long term projects.

Divide a piece of paper down the middle.

On the left-hand side write down what you want to accomplish in life.

Then on the right-hand side write down how old you, your wife and kids will be when you hit your goals.

Decide accordingly.

Sometimes the salvage value is worth more. I'd uthanize the boat and let its parts live on as donors. Bring a chainsaw, cut out those 540s+velvets and put them up on BAT.

You'll get about the same $$$ as if you listed a kidney.

:( How to get $100,000 for a restored boat. Spend $500,000 on it.

We've been out on a handful of boats with friends.

Planning on borrowing a boat from a friendly GTAMer for my trip in Sept fishing trip...does that count?
I guess... Lol
I'm Just teasing, I was actually curious as well.

Mostly the stupid one’s go bankrupt . Buying a boat is cheap and easy , keeping it afloat and winter storage will cost seven K in the GTA for a thirty ft , if you can do your own winterizing and spring commissioning . The “free boat” the old guy at the marina is gifting ? Yeah twenty one grand in your first three years ….
Why aren’t young people getting into sailing ? Well , student debt , maybe a mortgage, god help you if you have kids that hate boats , and its a gateway drug , you’ll want a bigger boat and go south, sail in big name regattas , usually end up banging some chick at a party , which leads to the divorce, then you have no boat .

A yacht used to be a thousand a foot. Now that might get you a tinnie on a trailer. Pride of the fleet cruisers are in the millions.

New boat = new technology. Boat by wire etc. Services are hidden behind liners.

Restoring a used boat gets us into the practicality discussion and unless you have a ton of space the true costs get really bad. Even a 16 footer is tough in a single car garage.

People in general aren't as much into dirty hands. I don't mind wood and varnish but fiberglass isn't fun. I've restored a few and built or helped build hulls up to 35 feet. It gets ugly on multiple fronts.

Old fiberglass runabouts have a lot of wood components, most of which will be rotten. Cockpit sole, transom and stringers are usually shot. Decks delaminate and bottoms go soft from years of pounding over waves. Toughening them up adds weight. Foam flotation gets water logged. Environmentalists get snarky over two-stroke oil slicks.

Tops and upholstery are needed to ice the cake.

My last cruiser was aluminum, maintenance was pretty easy, the only woodwork was inside and that was pretty sturdy.

That doesn’t make fuel, insurance, marina and winter storage any cheaper.

The money isn't always the issue. I envy the folks that can consistently manage to free up the 8 plus hour free time to enjoy the things.
That alone had my nautical hobby only go a couple of seasons.

I was talking with big boat people on the weekend. Lowball offers are starting to be successful. 32' cruiser that needed a $70K repower to be sellable in the low 200's listed at 120k and picked up for 25k. Lots of similar stories. Owners that got in too far are starting to focus on stopping the bleeding.

As per @GreyGhost , it’s deal time on any boat needing love or attention. My boat mechanic friend has a boat the owner has put over one hundred k into ( it was a fourty k boat ) and now needs out , it can be bought for thirty .
Since we are sort of done doing anything long distance in Lake Ontario , we are sticking with our thirty ft sailboat , but thank you Oakville , I’m at eight K a year for dock and winter storage .

While not a boat owner. I've learned one lesson for hobbies, projects, repairs.
You typically need three things. Money, tools, time.
You'll seldom have all all three at the same time.

I’d argue it’s just money , money buys tools and time . Sadly it always comes down to money .

Add more bureaucracy and cost to boat ownership. Transport canada now requires pcl renewal every 5 years and is phasing out existing lifetime licenses. Tax and spend. Another win for big daddy Carney.

As a boat owner I have absolutely no problem with this. $24 and 5 minutes of my time every 5 years is an incredibly small price to pay. Maintaining databases of vehicle licenses is not free and the cost should be borne by the users of said vehicles instead of the general taxpayer. Doug Ford should take note (referencing the Ontario license plate renewal fee cancellation FYI).

The vast majority of boats never have a license check. Most cottage lakes have a police boat on them for a day a year or less. This increases burden on those that follow the rules but will do nothing for the vast majority that don't bother as the chance of consequences is infinitesimally small.
