You have to go through with the ha$$le of getting the records expunged, but even then I think the US border guards may still have access to the information.

They do. His girlfriend at the time was also with us. She was 18 and had been charged with shoplifting, 3 years before. She was ultimately found not guilty, however, they still had records of a juvenile charge in their system.
(Another reason why guys in their 30s shouldn't date teenagers. Just one of many.)

I thought they asked "Have you ever been charged with..." Not convicted.
That one got me. I was charged, but the crown withdrew them (after a small donation to Salvation Army). When I explain this to the border guard, he had no clue what I was talking about.
