The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

I can't fathom being a tow truck driver in a heavily populated area.

A) The equipment has to cost a fortune, then there are insurances and licenses plus the usual overheads.

B) The supply of clients is sporadic and limited, feast or famine.

In the past, the local garage / gas station would have a basic model to pick up vehicles locally and it would be run by the mechanic or a staff member that did other things. In Toronto the corner garages are getting harder to find and the dedicated tow truck operator becomes the vulture, parked at an opportune spot.

How does he make money between hauls and how much does he need to make per week for the business part to work?
Makes me wonder as well, no shortage of brand new 100k tow trucks and added custom $10,000 custom machined rims that seem to sit on the side of the highway all day.

Given that they are shooting each other and setting competitors trucks on fire, I don't think profitability is an issue in the GTA. Yes, it's probably feast or famine but they ensure that feast time is very gluttonous.

So about 1200 lbs of dirt plus you? Was some in the front passenger seat or all behind you?
Years ago I was working on a job and we had about a yard of concrete extra. The foreman told the operator to put it in his truck, and he'd haul it up to his cottage a few miles away where he had a spot for it. (makes me wonder if he planned the extra yard) That's about 4000 pounds in a normal truck. It was squatting and I heard what happened later. When he went over the railroad tracks, the rear tires burst. He couldn't get to the spare, and couldn't jack that kind of weight up. By the time he go it all sorted, the concrete had completely set up and he needed a jackhammer to remove it.

A highway hookup could easily be $1000 or more. Emergency tows from collision to collision reporting centers are about $300, then another $200 to a body shop. There is a lot of consumer cheating (dollies, toll charges, standby fees erc). Drivers get substantial kickbacks from body shops and if you believe the news corrupt OPP officers feeding them tows for commissions pop up with regularity. There also might be a little bit of organized crime in there too -- sale and delivery of contraband is known to happen in the towing industry.

Small operators can fill in between lucrative emergency and police impound tows with regular work moving cars around for dealers, insurance companies, and repair shops. They don't fight for that regular work - it's the emergency stuff, accidents and police impoundments that get them excited.

You don't need many to make a $1500/mo truck payment.

Beck taxi running reds and missing cyclists by luck alone.

Report him and include the video link. Not likely that anything will come of it but you have to at least try, with such a dangerous driver. Besides, I work about a minute walk from there and don't want to get hit in the intersection, while crossing the street.

Beck suspended driver (he will just pop up somewhere else). A lawyer suggested the rider file a police report. I don't know what the rider chose to do. A bunch of pretty clear violations there, I don't know if police ever ticket based on video or just warn and make an entry in the computer to bend him over the next time they have him pulled over.

Id put money on the rider encouraging the driver to get somewhere in a "hurry" with incentive. Guy with a fair wouldnt just drive like that considering the meter is running on time and sitting in traffic would net him more money otherwise.

Rider as in cyclist not rider as in a potential paying passenger.

Remember, there's a minimum on the meter from the moment that you get in. Making money in the core is about short trips and turn-over.

Unless you're serving clubs. Then you want fares that are far out of the core and will turn down local runs, even though it's illegal.

Amazing. 220 km/h on hwy 8 in waterloo. Tried to race a cop car. Ran from police.

Two Waterloo Regional Police officers in an unmarked cruiser spotted the Kitchener man, 33, on the night of June 17, 2020, behind the wheel of a 1991 Nissan Skyline.

The man also claimed his car “made every cop in this town jealous” and alleged police were out to get him because he “built their dream car.”

Sigurdson found the man guilty of dangerous driving, stunt driving and failing to stop for police. He will be sentenced in August.

Sounds like a real winner

Started off doing donuts away from all people (except his videographer). Then led police on an hour long chase (including at least one close call with a motorcycle).

"
✅
Donuts in the parking lot
✅
Passing cars on the on-ramp
✅
Driving 200 km/h on the highway shoulder
✅
Removing his license plates
❌
Evading arrest by York Regional Police Air2 and Canine Units
This 19-year-old with the need for speed put hundreds of lives at risk on May 12. As such, he's paying the price:
✅
Flight from peace officer
✅
Dangerous driving
✅
Stunt driving
✅
Drive - hand-held communication device
✅
Use plate not authorized for vehicle
✅
Red light fail to stop
And, it's not his first rodeo:
✅
Breach of probation"

I don’t see the point on private property. Here’s your unnecessary noise ticket. Here’s your trespass notice. Now beat it.

If you can't even be on your best behaviour when you have the Sword of Damocles hanging over your head from a previous incident, you're an idiot.

Dangerous operation of a vehicle is a Criminal Code charge. You can be hit with it in your own driveway.

*EDIT* - And this wasn't private property.

I can’t remember the last time I got a speeding ticket that was for the actual speed I was doing. Cops use to use discretion.

Without the videographer, the initial dangerous driving charge could probably be beaten in court (Who was in danger, obviously he was making a lot of noise so any traffic headed for that location should be able to hear and react appropriately). Having the videographer standing there makes it a hard one to win as they were in danger.

And maybe they would have if it was you and you didn't run? Being on probation (and assuming that driving/donuts was a probation violation), he probably would have been given the maximum charge (as he should get). Running from police, they give you maximum charge for everything that happened along the way.
