What is up with people?

Appreciate the feedback. We've done the temp agency in the past (from my understanding) with mixed results. It also is a much larger expense for a smaller company, so not sure if I'd like to revisit as I want to keep the money flowing to our current staff.
Temp agency is usually terrible I have tried that route and there is a reason they are at a temp agency and not working. It may take a bit to show but almost always comes out. The area you are in has almost zero unemployment and makes it much harder if they do not have a job they really don't want one. I got a resume the other day that actually said not interested in doing anything physical and need to go home early most days

Just my 2c on this. I work in a large company closely with management and HR.
We are having the exact same issues. Trying to hire for a ton of positions in ON but not a lot of options and many leave within a short amount of time.
It isn't easy work and the pay isn't great, you can make almost the same hourly flipping burgers. We do have good benefits and a union however. But this is the problem.

Same experience as Scuba Steve, temp agencies usually send duds. Most people there are just shopping around for jobs and never end up staying.
We are basically now scraping the bottom of the employment barrel and it shows.
I had one girl show up an hour late on her first day wearing a tank top to a factory position and walked off at the first break.

Our Scarborough facility has the best retention of workers and also the highest % of immigrants. One Supervisor is linking this to the low immigration rate due to COVID. Established Canadians do not want to do these jobs and the younger generation have been taught to dream big. Have not looked into this enough to draw a conclusion.

I can't disagree totally with this statement, With only 20 employees no one get's lost or forgotten about. While we do have to remain profitable it is not at the cost of people. I don't get involved in peoples personal lives but if that had an issue they know they can discuss it and we'll do our best to accommodate. I have no idea what you do for a living, but I'm sorry to hear how you feel.

Well then your company is an exception.
I'm in public service so... non of this discussion applies to me, but... I do read the paper.

The immigrant situation is interesting. I have seen facilities that brought in someone new to Canada (awesome), when the company wanted more people to work, that person brought in more of their friends and family (hard workers, awesome). At a certain point, the business has to be careful as the group can become large enough to exert influence (business doesn't like this but could bring in necessary change or it could be arm twisting that doesn't end well). Alternatively, the workers are happy for the job and the situation works out great for all. You can't tell which way it will go at the beginning.

As Canadians, I find we don't have nearly the connection to "our people". I could care less about someones background but there are clear advantages to promoting and helping to advance "your people".

Just curious but have you contacted any of the people that didn't stay and ask why they left?
Keep in mind these were part-time positions, where the people we hired only stayed for a day or so. But, we actually did try to make contact with both of them via phone and email. Neither replied back to us. So we have no feedback on an area we could potentially improve.

One thing I’ve learned in my career, and I actually had this today, is basically ask my managing director 2 levels up for feedback.

Open discussion:
- are you happy with my work?
- any concerns?
- how can I help make your life easier with day to day workload?
- what do I need to do to get one level up further

So far have had these discussions 2x since I started here 7 months ago. And asking about moving up got me promoted at the 5 month mark 1 level up and a 15% bump.

But I’m all for open communication, and I have learned that if I don’t ask…I’ll never get.

‘we never knew you wanted to move up’ is something I’ve heard before, and will never hear again.

Obviously this doesn’t work in all companies, but I’ve done this within my department in every company I’ve worked in since 2007.

Immigrants, especially new ones are desperate and easy to exploit. Scarborough is in the GTA and cost of living is high
By your own account you pay at or near the min wage, tell me, how are they supposed to make ends meet? Pay rent/mortgage? You know what the housing situation is like in ontario.

People say "dont like min wage jobs? Learn a skill, go into trades, learn to code" etc etc etc.
So people say, ok then!

People with options in life(local canadians and 2nd gen immigrants) will do exactly that, exercise their options

We dont realize how much canada NEEDS immigrants. Without them the whole country collapses. We're hopelessly addicted to them, a steady supply of desperate slaves, without which we cannot function. Used as quick-fix bandaids that will solve all our probems!

Dont believe me? Look at brampton ,it has the highest covid positivity in ontario, maybe even canada.
Who lives there? who works there? Delivering the amazon packages, working in factories, driving for uber eats, all for peanuts.

I am not management and I have zero control over the pay. I said almost the same amount flipping burgers, not min wage.
All that said, we pay starting at $18/hr for a job that requires no education, background or experience. This is also starting salary and no I don't expect someone to survive on that in the GTA. Market dictates rates for most things unfortunately
Most of the experienced workers take in much more due to experience and seniority.

I do agree with you on immigrants, we do need them. We have millions of these entry level jobs that most people feel they are too good for. But all immigrants aren't created equal. Educated, middle-class immigrants also do not want these jobs.

We now do a 360 degree review. I review the staffs performance and they review my management performance, we keep it constructive and open without the fear of retribution from either party. So far it has worked very well, and people seem to enjoy the fact they can speak openly about concerns they might have. We also try to encourage anyone with a complaint to provide a potential solution and this has been great as it opened my eyes to area's of our business I would normally never know about. Feedback is paramount to success.

Any civilized industrial nation requires an influx of people from outside the region, as jobs are often created faster than the domestic or "native" population can expand to an age to work them. I don't feel anyone is a "slave" when they choose to come to Canada.

Maybe society is depressed?

- Droughts
- Inflation
- Insane rent prices
- Insane housing prices
- Envy or they are jealous about what their boss can afford/have???
This.

Alongside short attention spans and what's called Future Shock. Alvin Toffler did a great deal of work, from a book to documentary on it in 1972, and it's all come to light.

I'm a first gen immigrant, I've seen my dad/mum work slave jobs, paying 10x the insurance rates of locals when we arrived, along a lot of other 'immigrant' taxes that move this country. This whole place is founded on people coming in. Other than that, I'm in the gen or class that has accepted I will never own a home, or save enough to live the life my boss has. With inflation, wealthy immigrants coming in and sweeping whatever is left, insurance hikes, additional costs like phone bills, internet, pricey phones, etc... that previous generations didn't have. I can tell you, I know many who have given up.

This is the best way forward. You don’t want resentful employees, or anyone angry within your ranks.

Sometimes it’s a perceived slight that’s based on nothing.

Ive had guys tell me they’re so ****** they’re not being promoted, or overlooked, or kept out of different areas.

I always ask ‘did you mention it to your manager?’ And the answer is always no. They don’t know how to approach the topic.

This is my first role with official direct reports. I’m trying to find a good balance between asking how they’re feeling, what they want, and not pressuring them. We’re all new and learning together.

In our company we have the weekly/bi-weekly scheduled 1:1 sessions between employee and their manager. Basically 30 minutes that you can use to raise any concerns and issues, share ideas, connect, whatever. I think it's an amazing tool.

there is no loyalty from either party anymore
those days are long gone

for unskilled, minimum wage workers
you might be better off with a staffing agency

cost a few dollars more and the workers will be useless
but the body count should be dependable

can you automate?
