We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

Trying to get into airsoft and holy **** what a mess of laws.

Got my hands on this: https://www.sigsauer.com/proforce-p229-airsoft-pistol-green-gas.html

And thankfully @GreyGhost was kind enough to explain to me that it’s effectively illegal to own as it’s too close to LOOKING like a real gun…so it’s bad….

Idiot politicians, the lot of them that went through with this ‘gun spray must ban’ instead of dealing with the actual issues.

Can’t even find a good way to buy a legal airsoft / BB gun on the used market.

Have the laws changed? My son used to play and his gun looks as if it could be real. Back when I bought it for him, I think the rule was the red barrel tip was required for the US but not Canada, which I thought was ironic.

You decide. It looks like there may be a window for scary black guns above 366 and below 500 fps but htf is a cop going to figure that out? If you get arrested, you've already lost.

These are air guns not powerful enough to cause serious injury or death, but designed to resemble a real firearm with near precision. Replica firearms, except for replicas of antique firearms, are classified as prohibited devices.

In particular, some air guns commonly known as air soft guns may fall into this category. These are devices that have a low muzzle velocity and muzzle energy, and that usually discharge projectiles made out of a substance such as plastic or wax rather than metal.

An airsoft gun, firing a .20 g 6 mm plastic pellet with a muzzle velocity below 111.6 meters per second (366 feet per second), and resembling with near precision an existing make and model of a firearm, other than an antique firearm, is a replica firearm and therefore a prohibited device.

Although replica firearms are prohibited, individuals may keep those they owned on December 1, 1998. You don't need a licence to possess them, and they do not need to be registered. However, you cannot import or acquire a replica firearm. If you take a replica firearm out of Canada, it will not be allowed back in."

Yeah, you would hope they do some ballistics but who knows. Realistically, you'd need to have it out in the open to have a problem with the cops, or have done something pretty bad to warrant them to search your vehicle, but I guess it's like having those license plate frames that every single dealership sells their cars with...

Also, for a gas powered gun, it could be low on gas, or an electric gun low on battery. Of course they wouldn't go through the trouble of making sure the canister or battery were full. Guess I'll stick to paintball (which I imagine being more satisfying anyways).

All good fun , till your kid “borrows” it to shoot pop cans at a friend’s big lot . Once you have a federal firearms charge , it limits the ability to travel to many countries , be bondable or insurable for many jobs . Not the conviction, which you may get out of , the charge stays on your record forever . If you like sports they still allow , trap shooting or bird hunting , you have lost your PAL and don’t get to do that either .
I don’t agree with any of the new rules , but I’m not going to potentially ruin my life over airsoft replicas .

Alrighty...so I guess the consensus is 'stay away from that thing'.

Too bad. Looked to be good fun.

Wife doesn't want it in the house anyway...so I guess it's going back

It's under 366FPS, looks like a prohibited firearm, I didn't have it before 1998, and it's too much risk for little reward.

Anyone got recommendations for a LEGAL airsoft / bb gun?
