My mom wants to go across the country this summer. She wants to drive out and take the train back.
We plan on allowing 3 weeks to do it, which should be fine.
My question is, car rental out there one way, is there a company that does this? And reasonably priced?

Thanks in advance.

It's very expensive to do this as they have to pay someone to bring the car back. Can cost upto a couple hundred dollars.

There is a one way drop charge, but its different with rental companies so you have to shop around. The train from Van to Calgary is pretty interesting, then you look at the factories and every crappy backyard all the way across the praries stopping at every ninth bale of hay.

Fly to Calgary, rent car and drive to Van. Take mom to East Hastings street in van and show her crackheads and original inhabitant hookers, tell her thats Regina and Saskatoon and Winnipeg all in one shot. If she still wants it put her on the train and wave. Drive over to Number 7orange and drink till the strippers look cute, fly home from Van and beat mom by 6 days and be a grand ahead.

Lmao. Proud Canadian eh.

Your only break on a one way rental is if they have a BC car that needs to be returned to BC. There used to be a car delivery service where a person would want their car delivered somewhere and you could drive it there for free. I don't know if it still exists.
You paid the gas and had a limited number of days to get there. Usually decent cars.

Western Canada
We have cars to be delivered to western Canada year-round. Our clients are individuals and companies who send their vehicles west for a variety of reasons. They keep their vehicles in good condition and they will trust you to take care of their car and effects by driving carefully at all times and by keeping the inside of the car in a clean condition. If the owner of the car is a private individual, they generally use the trunks of their cars for their own personal clothing items that they require at their destination.

Note that this is only a one way means of transportation for individuals wishing to travel to western Canada. While we do not usually have vehicles returning from western Canada, it is always worth contacting us to check availability.

The financial arrangement with respect to driving our clients' vehicles to western Canada varies from season to season. During the summer, drivers pay their own gas plus a registration fee of $100.00. During the winter, however, there is no registration fee required and we sometimes give a small gas allowance of $50.00 to $75.00. In July, for instance we would require a deposit of $400.00 Cdn and $300.00 Cdn would be refunded upon delivery. In February we may require a deposit of $300.00 and the driver would receive $350.00 Cdn upon delivery. During the spring and fall the driver's deposit is usually fully refundable, although not always, making fuel the driver's only expense.

Please note that these figures are generalizations and may fluctuate depending on the time of year and availability. Simply contact us a few weeks prior to your departure to find out the financial arrangement and vehicle availability.

This pretty much sounds like how those Locked up Abroad episodes start....

Good Luck. I haven't talked to anyone regarding the service for decades but the last one said it worked fine.

Keep in mind that you don't get a super long time so off the main road sight seeing isn't practical.

If I was doing it I would start by taking a bunch of digital photos of the car showing any blemishes and the mileage just in case the owner forgot that his wife had crunched a tail light.

Thanks for the advice on this. Stuff to consider for sure.
