The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I went to a couple of HBCs when they started liquidation to see if they had any high end G-Shocks marked down. Didn't see anything better than the 25-40% discounts that were regularly offered (although, I think only for watches less than $500?). Were there ever any decent deals on MR-Gs?

There was one in the case at the Burlington store. Didn't check the model and the price was just south of $2K.

The watches I actually wear are my G-shocks. I actually went into a rabbit hole for a while which ended when I needed to buy a case to house them all. My favourite of those is one of the cheapest - the 5160. I wasn't crazy about it when I first got it, but the more I wear that watch, the more it feels just right. I could wear the 5610 in any situation. In my mind a watch with a battery is only worth so much, but I would have seriously considered a MR-G 5610 at the right discount.

I love how Gs can be so utilitarian, and yet so fun at the same time.

I have a bunch of them. Good work watches. There's a big sub group of people modding G-Shocks (and Seikos). The big US company for Gs is SKX MODS. I think SKX has their stuff made offshore and is unsigned. Ali has signed stuff. They make metal kits in SS and Ti for both the 5600 and 5610 to replicate GMW-5600/MR-G.

Fortunately, I was able to avoid the modding rabbit hole. Out of that , I might never have emerged.

When you have more money into a seiko than a Patek you know your life has taken a wrong turn.

There are a bunch of people selling modded Seikos (offshore parts + OEM NH movements on Marketplace in the $250-350 range. Hardly Patek money.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek. Obviously there are affordable mods but if you really went down the rabbit hole (like a custom one-off case in precious metal), you could spend a fortune.

For a watch I paid $650 for I'm not at all bothered about who owns the company. Finish is quite good. I'd say better than your average Seiko. Nice heft as well. I'm not sure what retail price is. Guess I should have checked before I purchased.
Good to know. Not fussed about Invicta ownership from a snobbery standpoint, I have been more concerned about junk with a historic name glued to the dial with Glycine because I've never been able to see one in person. Glad to hear it's respectably finished and good value. Will keep my eyes peeled for one, as some models of the Combat Sub are among the thinnest (reasonably priced) traditional divers I know of, at least according to the spec sheet...

That whole story is chrono porn . There is a great movie about Harrison that created the amazing time pieces that solved the problem of longitude , called appropriately “ Longitude” , he was told the British govt would offer a one million pound note prize , which is like a hundred million bucks in today’s money then renigged . The Harrison clocks displayed at the Grenwich center were so neglected that the estimates to restore them is in the tens of thousands.

I had Seamaster colab on my Bingo card. This one came outa nowhere (well, the Swatch Group, but that's a given).

I sold my speedmaster when the collab came out with swatch group , now they want to ( imo) devalue the seamaster . Let’s be reasonable here , would James Bond show up wearing a Seamaster Miami vice Bahama collaboration?

I thought the SeaSwatch was still just a rumour, complete with some horrible amateur renderings?

The above Longines is a stunning watch when not made of plastic, could see them doing a plastic Spirit chrono or Big Eye. The plastic Rolex, though, has to be Swatch just trying to wind people up...

Headed over to the Niagara outlet mall yesterday to look for some apparel for our upcoming Italy trip. Agreed to go with the wife because I'd recently read about the Hour Passion shop, and hoped to sneak in a visit. It's a Swatch Group-owned store for selling discount stock of Swatch, Tissot, Hamilton, Balmain, Rado, Mido and Longines watches. No higher-end stuff, though (e.g. Omega, Breguet, Glashutte, etc.)

I've got a few Longines watches on my list if the price is right (Zulu, sector dial, Big Eye, various Heritage models), so headed straight for that section. They had a couple nicer Heritage models (35mm Conquest, 38mm Silver Arrow), but neither was quite right. Otherwise, selection was limited, mostly the cheap and anonymous-looking polished or gold dress watches that only seem to serve to dilute the Longines brand. They did have a few of the Legend Divers, but it's not to my taste.

So we headed over to the Hamilton section, and I noticed a couple Spirit of Liberty variants, which is a watch I've always loved the look of as a handsome take on a slightly casual dresser, a great office watch when office attire is rolled-cuff Oxfords and chinos. It's on for a reasonable $800, down from the sticker price of $1370. I did have one offered to me at $1200 without prompting at Mariani in Oakville a couple years ago, which was still too rich for a watch with details I don't love. But at $800, suddenly those details get less important...

So I leave the one I like in the tray, and go take a wander just in case something else catches my eye. And something in a Rado case absolutely does. It's a Swatch brand, like Certina and Balmain, that I largely ignore beyond the overpriced Captain Cook diver, as most models seem to be weird rounded designs with dark tinted metals and are very much not to my taste.

But this model R32254025 (rolls right off the tongue)is another casual dresser with more than a hint of Aqua Terra design language. Silver sunray dial combined with blued triangle markers and hands, and it feels great on the wrist. Not too sparkly, but the indices catch the light with enough flashes that it feels sharp enough to also wear with a suit:

Sticker is somewhere around $3600, store price is 30% off that, and turns out that particular Rado case is marked down even further to over 60% off. When the wife pipes up that my birthday is soon and that would make a nice present, the sales guy knows his job is done.

The 42mm case (wears much smaller) is Hyperchrome, a ceramic material that Rado seems to have built their entire niche under the Swatch umbrella around. Apparently it's almost impossible to scratch, but I'm warned that a hard enough whack can actually chip the case. Weird. Other highlights are the dial and indices are gorgeous, case is decently thin at 10mm, and I love the strap that fills the lug area like a bracelet, which also comes with a nice signed deployant clasp. Negatives are the strap costs over $400 to replace (it's not *that* nice) and a mid-tier Rado version of Swatch's ubiquitous Powermatic 80 movement, which is not smooth. At least it can be regulated and doesn't have plastic parts.

Definitley an unexpected one, but it scratches a lot of itches. Only problem is I've got my eye on a used Montblanc for a very good price with a very similar vibe, so I may end up scratching that itch twice...

Funny I was in Niagara last week and stopped at that shop . I couldn’t find really anything I needed ( thank goodness) . Maybe in six months when I’m out that way again.

I suspect the vast majority is unsold inventory, so will inevitably be the less desirable pieces. Almost no divers, maybe a Tissot Seastar and the above mentioned Longines compressor, but not much else...
