The Game Changed in Venezuela Last Night

The change didn't happen last night, the change happened last March 13th.

Yeah Hugo was good at pissing off the americans... but he ruined the countries economy doing it.
Chavez figured out a long time ago it was cheaper to buy the votes of poor people, the vast majority of Venezuela's population, than the rich.
The new leaders want to try to fix the economy, which requires the co-operation of the poor... but the poor are ******.
The price of gasoline went from $0.02/US gal to $0.17/US gal this summer.
Venezuela has VAST petroleum reserves, but the populace is lives in the third world.

We only care about white people like Ukraine!

/sarcasm

You mean like when we stood back and let Stalin kill off as many as 7.5 million Ukrainians in 1932-33?... at least as many as the Holocaust. Maybe the Ukrainians need a better PR team.

We only poke our nose in people's business after WWII

I'm not going to pretend to know about all that that's going on in Ukraine or Venezuela, but in both situations, people are dying, and there does not really appear to be a peaceful end in either case. Sad stuff.

Man the way we dealt with that was sure an ugly scene.

See, the Depression was in full swing, but Russia had full employment. The shine hadn't come off the romantic notion of Communism as the solution to the world's problems yet. So what happened was you had left-leaning western reporters go out to Russia and deliberately ignore the famine. They either stayed in Moscow or went on a Kremlin-stage-managed tour of the eastern Ukraine and didn't question a thing. In some cases desperate people did approach reporters only for their accounts to be ignored. Then these same reporters returned home to the US or England or France saying that there was no famine at all. The few who actually did go bother to check things out for themselves were mostly ignored or blown off as a crank minority.

You do because it's your homeland. The media here doesn't, and the average person doesn't.

Yup. Average person only cares about the condition of the Sochi washrooms.

Very tragic news. Crack mayor or not, I am VERY glad to live in this great country.

We are very lucky to be living in the best country in the world.

According to the video Venezuela has 25,000 murders a year with a population similar to Canada's. Since June 2012 the public has not been able to buy Guns or ammunition. Only the Police, army and private security can possess guns, sounds like Allan Rock's idea of utopia.

Hey the only holocaust that ever happened or matters is the jewish holocaust !!

I'm surprised at how light the coverage was considering the fact that we're dealing with an oil-rich nation that we should be bringing "freedom" and "democracy" to. I feel sorry for what the Venezuelans have been going through. Mistakes were made all around and I hope the situation works itself out with a minimum amount of harm to the regular folk.

Guvs control even the international media.. so, no surprises =(

Similarly, when the protests started in Turkey, %90 of the country itself was unaware of what was happening (worse yet, they thought there was terrorist attacks) due to media keeping quiet or feeding all kinds of BS, to not go against the guv. Only 1 channel was brave enough to livestream and that was only available on the internet... Most major news channels on TV showed in the first 4days, things like documentaries on penguins etc... And when there was the smallest event that they could use against the protestants, they multiplied by 100x and raged all day long.

So, "selective coverage" alone can portrait an event in opposite direction, not to mention all the "false-facts" they publish for guvs' benefits.

And international media is only as informed as what local media or guv decides to share.

The power of media to feed BS to an entire world is unreal. The magical oven that turns the society into sheeps. And then we can't argue for pot against alcohol because its just absurd lol

Well put - The only reason we know what is happening is through Twitter and Facebook and this is part of the reason why I posted here.

Even if this is a motorcycle forum and some people only care about what is happening under their noses an fail to realize why Gas today is almost 1.35 at the gas station. Over 400 people have read this thread and are now aware of what is happening. If every Venezuelan does the same then this is the only way in which people around the world will know what is happening.

Today is a very conflicting day for me, I hold a Canadian passport and consider myself more Canadian than anything since I have spent more time in here than anywhere else in the world, so I am extremely proud of the results at the Olympics specially hockey, but at the same time all that seems so meaningless when put in perspective of people dying and even worse the oppression of their freedom has it is happening in the place I grow up.

I don't know how any sane individual can watch footage of these riots (Venezuela, Ukraine, you pick) and still be against civilian gun ownership. Its proven time and time again that authorities can and will turn on their own people, and disarming the population just makes it that much easier to get away with.

Im curious what gun laws are gonna look like in Ukraine after the dust settles.

I'm not exactly sure how to synthesize all this information but armed to the teeth citizens at G20 couple years back woulda made better youtube. So I have to agree.
