Hate to break it to you but that food colouring is used a lot. I'd prefer that in food to the synthetic colours they have to be honest.

Didn't read the whole article, but I believe the cochineal is used as a dye ingredient in a large variety of different foods to produce a red colour. I remember reading that a few years back. Eatin 'em in unavoidable
