Pickup Trucks

Came home today with a shiny black GMC Canyon in the driveway.

Turns out the GM dealer took what I thought was a lowball offer, and even misread what I was asking for and gave me an additional discount. Naturally, my first thought was that I should have asked for more! I based the offer on the listed dealer cost for the truck plus options, plus a reasonable markup on the low end. Only condition from the dealer was the deal had to be closed by today.

I was so consumed with indecision that I was literally flip flopping on my choice as we headed to the QEW. East towards Niagara and the Ford dealership, or west and up around the lake to Toronto and the GM shop. The GMC was cheaper on all levels, both up-front and in rate, better looking and marginally better for towing. The Ford is reputed to be far more reliable, has a much better motor, lower insurance, and is better on gas.

In the end I budgeted in a 160k extended factory warranty for the GM (still a lot cheaper than the Ford) and rolled the dice. If you'd told me fifteen years ago that I would be buying a GM, I'd have slapped myself. Sure is a nice looking truck, just hoping I don't regret it...

I knew I'd done okay on the up-front deal when they hit me with a hilarious $6000 starting price for the warranty. Ended up well under half that, but I have to wonder how many people even know that the price is negotiable. My poor wife, who never met an upsell she didn't sign up for and also finds negotiating to be tortuously awkward, was nearly dying and begging me to take every one of their counter-offers. Didn't do me any favours, that's for sure.

The truck came with a bed liner, just need to find some winter tires and rims. Leaning towards Quattro Tires at the moment, curious if anyone has dealt with them? Can get a set of the Continental VikingContact 8 XL' s, TPMS, and some cheapo black alloy rims for a touch over $2200, tax in, mounted but not installed. Slightly crappier Bridgestones, similar rims, TPMS, but fully installed, would be $2900 at the GM shop.
I think you picked the winner.

Regarding winter tires, hubby and I both bought used aluminum rims off kijiji and tires from Canadian Tire (Motormaster brand) and we've had no issues with them at all...we also went one size down (for example my summer set is 16" and my winter set is 15")...

When I got my Ranger I looked at PMCtire (Sherbrooke, QC). They beat anything I could find anywhere else and delivered to my door. Firestone Winterforce 2, DTD steel black rims, TPMS, set of lugnuts and mounted/balanced...$1672

Congrats! She's a beauty!

We said some prayers for your powertrain in Quito today.

Thanks. Seems like a spot where they might get listened to!

I've looked, but I'm trying to avoid steelies this go-round, and the alloys available are the wrong size, beat to crap and seem a shame to put on a new truck, or six hours away. I'm still looking, though...

Interesting, hadn't seen these guys before. They beat the bigger guys on rim pricing, but can't get there on the tires in the sizes that work for me. Thanks for the tip.

Happy new year, all. Appreciate the kind words and feedback!

I shopped a bit for winter rims/ tires and at the end of the day the Toyota dealer had the best pricing . I was sort of shocked . Factory wheels and decent tires . I stopped doing steelies about two decades ago , they rust like heck in the first winter and just do not improve the look of any vehicle , the cost differential is close enough I’ll always just get an alloy .

Used to buy from them for years.

This past year decided to give Kijiji a whirl.

Alloys + winter tires = $400
5 month old all seasons = $500

Both are working great on the Maverick.

Congrats on the new truck @Priller i like those a lot.

What is your goal or going with winter tires? Is it for better winter traction or to save your oem wheels?
If you're just trying to save your oem wheels I would get a set of aluminum factory replica wheels and put winter tires on them. Most places will be able to get them. Here's one example:
If you just want better winter traction you could swap to a better tire onto your oem wheels. This was my goal and I went to the Cooper Road&Trail tire which is still light so it doesn't kill your mpg but has much better winter performance over the All-Weather Hancook's that came stock. Pleasantly surprised they handled better in the Summer as well.
