You can get ticketed for faded plates too. It's your responsibility to replace damaged plates.
My friend got a ticket for it. The cop said if he didn't fix it that his license would be suspended until he did!

Oh i see. Which section does that go under? I mean i can understand major rust but fading?
"...the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times"

Funny enough, my old plate was 4W075.... had it for years, on my bike before my last one (plate vanished with the bike....), i had my plate sucked in to my swingarm, between the tire and swingarm, so it got pretty mangeled... if you try to read the plate, it said: 4VC15.... ;D

Never had issues with that from cops... ;D

Older plates are much better than the new plates. The cheap blue vinyl they switched to (did you know the blue letters aren't painted on? It's a hot melt vinyl film!) wasn't holding up very well to UV (causing all the faded plates you see) so when we were making them they made us "double foil" them (put them through the heat roller machine that lays the blue vinyl, twice).

lol

MTO, service ontario, drive test centre. In fact, any places that would sell them even courts, stock from dealerships or police stations. I believe other than clears( to some extent), they are illegal.

Hope that settles it.

IIRC, its $85+ surcharge

Sorry, settles what? You referred to the MTO, but were in fact talking about Service Ontario. I just wanted to make sure you realize they are two different things.

My plates are almost all white now and have never had an issue.

CECC (Lindsay jail). I put my big greasy hand print on the back of every plate I made. I figured if some vehicle was getting checked over after a murder or something and they were like "damn, look at this sweet set of prints on this stolen/swapped plate, lets go get him" woulda made for funny story :)

Whenever a friend of anyone in jail ordered a personalized plate we'd all sign the back of it with a sharpie when we were making it :D

Just replaced my faded CRV plates...and as they were less than 6 years old, I got them for FREE!!!!

if you leave you vehicle outside 24/7, the sunlight attacks the finish, bleaches the letters and starts corrosion. Not sure if plastic covers prevent any of that.

Must only affect new plates or something because I've seen a lot of newer faded ones while my original plate that was on my first car still looks almost new other than a few bends from numerous accidents.

^^ this. The newer plates (5 years or so) are much more cheaply than the older plates (you can feel the difference just holding them).
