Does anyone have a particular recommendation for a company (bank, insurance company?) that will provide health care coverage for Canadian citizens during trips to the US?

went to kanetix.ca and did quote comparisons there, for all of my trips abroad.

they throw out 4 or more options, and you just pick the one you like best, based on coverage and price.

I normally get it through CAA, but last year I was at the credit union getting my US $ and they mentioned they sell it too so I ended up getting it through them.

My TD Infinite Travel Visa covers me for up to 7 days. Once I had to extend it for 2 weeks and it only cost me a little bit extra.

I use world nomads, covers you anywhere in the world. A couple of years ago I had to use it for an emergency visit to a hospital, they were super efficient. By the time I was seen by a doc, they had already provided all the info to the hospital indicating I was covered. Good thing too, bill for the visit was over $10K.

i use td meloche monnex, my vehicles and house are with them...

also as a bonus i buy the 1 yr plan so i am allowed on as many trips as i want, with a maximum allowable stay outside of canada at 6 months minus 1 day ... so I could go on a 150 day trip with no problems ... total annual cost is only 120 / yr

Thanks for the info everyone. I currently have a CAA membership and I'm insured with TD MM, so I'll look into them.

Yeah thanks for TD tip - cheap bike insurance and good out of country coverage - that rocks for me as I'm out of country about 4 months of the year.

I bought CAA last time but it was way more than $120

CAA went through Manulife last I checked and simply ups the cost a bit. Last couple of years we've done the annual fam plan from Manulife.

When I lived in the UK I had American express UK as it allowed trips up to 30days and also covered adventure sports - skydiving, scuba , off piste skiing/snowboarding etc.

I have used TD here.

My broker has always had super competitive quotes, and he's a rider himself. Give him a call

Mark Cadman, All Risks Insurance (905) 492-2104.

I don't know if "advertising" on this site is frowned upon (this is my second post), but Mark has saved me a lot of money in the past and I know he can help others, too.

If you tell him Terrence sent you ... he might charge you more. Well, not true, he'll probably just make some disparaging remarks about me, but you can just tell him he's a sub-par pilot, and that will restore balance to the force.

I just bought travel insurance through CAA. It's $12.50 for four days (they dont insure for less days) and with my CAA membership it was $11.50.

My CIBC infinite Visa includes 5 million in coverage for up to 15 days per trip at no cost to me. They also give 1,000 to get the bike home if the doc says i'm not ok to drive.

Knock on wood I haven't had to use either yet.. but i definitely wouldn't leave the country without some kind of coverage..

Read the fine print for manulife. There was a program on yesterday and they denied coverage for a couple who thought they had full but the fune print said otherwise.... they now are 100 g in debt. I myself will be shopping elsewere

I use CAA too. Usually get an annual policy that covers the whole family - if memory serves you can get 15 day of 30 day versions (i.e. cover trips of up to 15 or 30 days respectively).

td just gave me $62 for 20 days.
