Has the city lost it's mind...

Dumb criminals. Where did they think they were going to take it in to turn it into cash? Did they have a plan to drive it across the province to take to an unsuspecting, or unaware of the situation scrap yard? Or maybe cut up a couple of km worth of wire into 1 foot chunks? Surely any scrap yard within 100km of this would have been called and warned to turn these guys in.

Umm, ya. Many years ago Bell Canada, on a Monday, were to take over part of Northern Bell in the area where mom & dad's camp was.
On the Sunday afternoon, evening my cousin and I thought we could make some easy money. We pulled down the poles, cut the wires and collected a TR6 trunk load of insulators.
Turns out we hit an area that was not yet to be taken over for another 2 months.
Opps. Bell had to work overtime to get the phones up and running. Some were without phones for 3 weeks.
Full disclosure, we only made $50.

Had one in Hamilton in July where a literal kid killed an innocent bystander, a young woman, who was just waiting at a bus stop outside Jackson Square downtown at rush hour. It's bad enough when they kill each other, but being reckless enough to be firing a handgun on a busy street deserves little sympathy, I think...

Honestly with the youth today...may as well just arrest the parents at the same time as the kid.

Maybe then people will take some responsibility for their kids' actions.

Doubtful...but one can hope.
It's funny that you think a single crackhead mother and no father anywhere, gives a single F for the kid or society. The vast majority of these kids came from the worst situations you can think of, and they're getting by the only way they see. Then they get caught, go to jail (or get out right away), and they only have their crappy situation to get back to.

For a number of years I lived near a youth detention center. I couldn't count the number of times a kid would escape just before their time was up just to be caught again so they could spend more time in lock-up. It was better than home.

Oh I'm sure they don't, and the kid is basically doomed to a life of crime as that's their only outlet that they know.

But what is the solution? Can't just keep them locked up. I'm all for rehabilitation, but this catch and release system we currently have going...it's obviously not working.

Let's see what Carney comes up with. There's supposed to be an announcement this week about changes to the bail system.

There is no fix for him and many others. Into the Gator pond with them.

50 new modular prisons (low security, of course.....because feels). All made by Modulaire, a subsidiary of Brookfield.
Build them in the arctic with nothing around, if they escape they have no where to go.

@timtune idea is good though. Give them discipline, meals and a purpose.

I would like to see what supposedly primitive tribes in remote jungles do with unproductive members of the tribe. Maybe we could learn a thing or two.

Heinlein did a short story about a society on a planet that worked on "OBs" (obligations, markers), and how one guy abused the system and became ostracised. Can't remember the title. It's been a good 40+ years since I read it.

The Amish practice shunning when members go against the grain. Peer pressure can be a good deterrent but the bar has been set so low by politicians and those in power that it hardly matters.

They get left to fend for themselves i imagine.

Chow is whining the Feds are only giving her $12000 per refugee for shelter support. She says she needs $50k a year for each of the 3500 asylum seekers the city cares for.

Looks link another 2% property tax raise is needs for Toronto residents to fund her helping hands.

Fuk that chit. When do we get to vote her out, I'm sure she will be gone.

You're more optimistic than I am. Who is going to run to replace her? There was a Tory rumour a few months ago but I suspect the skeletons with the intern will be used in private to keep him out. There are a few wanker councillors that will take a run but imo, the ones I think will run are worse than chow.

Tbh, I thought she was going to be much worse than she is. She's just useless not actively destroying things imo.

I get the sense she is trying to prove herself by not rocking the boat too much, and possibly because she is on a short stint. I guess if she gets a full term her true colours could come out. 🤷‍♂️ People seem to dislike her, but yeah, who else is there.

Regarding troubled youth, I’m one of the few that made it through. I was in and out of detention centres and foster care etc.

I was angry at the world and the social circles I was around encouraged lawlessness. There was some lovely foster parents that helped me along with some counselling that helped. And getting a job and riding my bicycle kept me busy.

I was lucky in regard to the foster care I received and there was some reflection seeing kids my age that were worse off than me and understanding I didn’t want to become a career criminal. I got my stuff together by the time I turned 18.

There is definitely a culture both in family and residential areas where you are the bad ass or the chump and anyone trying to learn how to get out is picked on by both family and the community. It’s generational.

I’ll always be grateful to the teachers, counsellors, family courts for the chances they gave me. I know others were given the same opportunities and went the other way. Lost some close friends to federal prison and ended up killed inside for burglary and break and enter etc.
