Goodbye 250!

I'm a bit sad...and a bit glad....but the 250 is now sold! Ended up selling it to a buddy for what I think was a very good price for both parties and now it's time to start looking again!

Narrowed down to:

ER-6N / NINJA 650R / NINJA 400R (long shot as buddy has one but I think I'd just go 650)
CB500X
FZ6R

I've sat and tried a bunch of the adventure bikes and they're just too tall for me. Going to check out a few ER6-Ns this week and take it from there. It'll be a pain to buy a bike without riding it due to weather but we'll see.

What do you guys think of an ER6-N that had a low side but has insurance/dealership info in regards to repairs?

I went from a Ninja 250 to a Ninia 650r. Same bike as the ER-6N. Good all around bike.

Er6n of Fz6r. .. tough call. I like both. Personally I wouldn't buy a dropped bike but that's just me. Likely I'd end up with the kawi if I was choosing from that list.

I'd be fine with it. You'd be surprised how much abuse the bikes can take before actually taking damage. Now if it were a high side....lol

I test rode a Versys 650 last season. From what I remember it was not any issue for me adjusting from my old CB 750. I think the engine is pretty much the same as in the Ninja 650/ERN6. Seems to me that these might be good choices for moving up from a 250.

CB500X.....very affordable. If you want an ADV bike, check out the thread on ADVRider........there is a vendor who is offering a comprehensive ADV conversion kit for the 500, incl. lace wheels and a little bit taller suspension while still keeping seat height manageable.

What ever u do don't get a 400r they only made em for a year for a reason lol plus the power to weight blows
Its pretty much a 650r with a 400 motor in it .

Yes I've heard that about the 400r unfortunately. Good looking bike but just too heavy for that motor.

The ER6-N is at the top of the list as I love the look of it, but I'm a little concerned about wind buffeting over long trips. 650R takes care of that with fairing. Looked at Versys as it seems like the do it all bike....but dammit it's way too tall I can't even swing my leg around onto it.

500X is great...but hard to find used, mainly used 500F and 500R but very few X's around.

We'll see what these ER6's look like in the next couple of days.

Thanks!

If you are willing to forgo ABS there are some older ERN6 for reasonable coin. The lowest priced one I saw on autotrader was $4100 and in excellent shape.

The CB500 bikes are really nice but as you mentioned they are pretty much too new for the used market at this point (especially the CB500X).

I have alerts set for a fazer.. sport touring for the long hauls, centre mount exhaust (may be troublesome for some tail bags), seems to go forever as well. Oh, akrapovic makes an exhaust for them!

if i had to choose, the fz6r. i really like the upright position of the fz6r, i sat on my buddies and it's very comfortable. and it's a detuned r6 motor. the ninja just seems a bit bulky imo. but who am i to talk, my f4i is fat.

I read a motorcycle magazine review that was able to put a positive spin on the 400, so somebody likes them. I think they get the bikes for free tho.

Just for clarity's sake, the Yamaha FZ6 and FZ6R are two different motorcycles.

the FZ6 is the detuned R6.
The FZ6R is a good intermediate bike, akin to Ninja's 650R.

If you like the look of the ER6N and it gets your jimmy's tingling, then you have your answer.

FZ6 vs FZ6R here: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?149745-FZ6-vs-FZ6R

If FZ6 is out of the equation, Id be looking into FZ6R. Smoother engine, finer sound with a 4cyl compared to Kawi. A lower COG is an advantage to FZ6 as well.

Depending on year, Kawi 650 engines have some vibration "issue".

A low sided bike should be fine as long as price is adjusted for it. Cant go wrong with dealership and insurance records. Still wouldn't be my priority though.

MP - we've talked about this before .....great bike for you and only $3k but needs a new drive the seller says is $400 - not sure what that is.

BTW FZ-06 is sweet and you can finance but I think the Scarver is the ticket for you....you can fully flat foot.
Was way ahead of it's time.

Quiet with the belt drive and should go and go as most BMWs will with maintenance.

Are you not going two up??? Extra oomph on the 650 worth it then.

Thanks Macdoc I forgot about the BMWs. I'm not even as worried about the height anymore, actually going to check out a VERSYS tonight. How's BMW reliability? The bike's listed are like 13 years old! And are they as expensive to maintain as their 4 wheeled brothers?

sticking to the up right position bike eh?

I would go ER-6N or FZ6R. but between both of those i'd say ER-6N is a badass upright position bike.

I didn't find anything horrible about BMW maintenance when I had one. Personally, the 650 CS never did it for me, I would look at it's sibling the 650 GS.
