gmail + voip phone - has anyone signed up recently - can't get it to work

WORKING NOW!!! GMAIL HAD A SURVEY WHERE YOU CAN COMMENT ABOUT THE NEW GMAIL LOOK AND I COMPLAINED - FREEFORM SECTION. EITHER THAT OR IT REALLY TAKES ABOUT 7 DAYS TO SET UP A PHONE ACCOUNT. THANKS FOR THE INPUT THOUGH.


Phone feature does not work.

Windows 7, IE 8.0, Teksavvy cable, voice and video chat installed and working BUT when I click the green phone icon I get a message above the dialer pad "please wait while we prepare your account, this may take a minute" and I can't use it. The mic/speaker/camera test worked fine.

The Google forum has been no help at all. This is available in Canada (I know several that use it) so my IP address is not a problem - if you sign up for Google Voice (subscribe to get a phone number to receive calls vs. just dial out) you need a US ISP address.

Anybody experience this and be able to fix it?

Most likely a SIP client config issue. Have you tried using a different client just to see if it'll work? I am not sure about the m$ platform, but there are several options for iOS and Android that integrate well into the dialer, so you should have the option on m$ as well.

Thanks Firestart. As the resident tech I thought you'd reply. I will keep it simple and not integrate this (if I can get this to even work) with Google Voice. The Google Voice Forum is full of people with problems doing this and Google does not offer support becuse it's a free service. Some cannot undo the integration and are screwed where nothing works correctly. That said, they should also back up their product and claims of it working and help if it does not work as *promised*. I will see if another user can access this from my computer - a good idea. I'll also see if I can use this from another computer too - to elimate my laptop as a possible culprit.

Not true, I have a working google voice phone # that lets me dial out AND receive calls. Did not use any proxy etc to set it up.

Unless you used one of the workarounds (like 403) it will not work in Canada.

SB132 - if so you were fortunate as the google forum does mention this is not for cda and a suggested workaround was to create a ip mask to a US based carrier (you need to download a program - not sure how this works). If you have google phone via a cdn isp, my 2 cents is to not change anything - the forum is full of folks with messed up cells and gv issues as they try to integrate them and the system may pick your CDN isp so that might even further mess things up.

Help from google is non-existent (I had to block the sender addresss - I was literally getting hundreds of emails a day from the foum) so my next question - what do the folks here recommend? All I need is to make LD calls within canada (mostly). Magic Jack seems to be a no brainer or maybe skype or stick to my $.10 / min plan with my cell (rogers). meh
 
Majic jack plus doesnt need a computer just plug it into your router and the wall works great and you can have a local #

No work around was used, maybe it is because I signed up near to when it first came out (it was called grand central or something, one number to forward to all your phones).

That may be it - I don't need yet another email address just to have gmail phone. I think it's another $10 for a local number. I have a system with a friend that is between London ON and Calgary. We text (free) and see if we can chat. She then calls me on MJ*. I really don't need a local number as i have folks that have MJ and Google phone - that works - but not for me it seems.

I'm sorry I can't help more with this, but I don't have much experience with Google's service.. With the amount of talk that I put in, I found voip.ms to be a good headache-free option. To have a local number, you pay $0.99-$1.49 a month and then it's a cent and a quarter a minute anywhere in North America. You can have it for half a cent a minute if you on't use premium routing, My $25 deposits last me 3-4 months and that includes maintaining 2 toll-free numbers, one parked cell phone number and my regular number. Huge pbx functionality, with all sorts of forwarding options and the call blocking with the "number not in service" message all included in the service. It's a Canadian company, based out of Montreal. I even set up some relatives living overseas with sub-accounts, so we can call each other on 3 digit extensions for free (they all have SIP phones or are running softphone apps on their cell phones when on WiFi).
