Full M

Hi everyone just kinda fell upon this site and seems real interesting. I have a question about the M road test which is what's involved and where's the simplest none pressured place to do it?
This by the way is not for myself but for my wife, I've been riding and had a license for 33 yrs and to tell you the truth I don't understand the new structure of the new classes. All I know is she wrote the test and I taught her to ride on a 440 Kawi the I sent her to the college to do the next part and she did another test there which I beleive is the M2. It's been 2 seasons now and I'm thinking she needs to do the M road test, correct me if I'm wrong.
She Now rides a heritage softail and does quite well at that although we do all our riding on the open hiways and not the busy hiyas like you poor buggers have to deal with.SoAs the question was stated what's involved in the road test and where's the best place to do it?I'm hoping it's some small out of the way place so for one we can make a trip out of it and two she s not overly intimidated.
thanks in advance:p

Hey, welcome to the forum. I took the M2 exit with CMA (Canadian Motorcycle association) and did my road test in Stoney Creek. Based on my experience I can not recommend the course. The course itself is $380 and here's what you get; a lot of group riding day one following the route you will take for your test the following day. The next day you come back and follow the same route you took all day yesterday and pass your test. The only thing they teach you is how to pass the test, nothing else. There was nothing else taught. Afterwards, the instructor even said as much; the course is designed so you pass the test, that's it.

If you're worried about passing and have an extra $380, then this is for you. But since you don't really learn anything, I would suggest looking up what types of things the MTO examiners look for, in fact I think there's a thread right here at GTAM, study that, go book your test with the MTO, pay only $75 and spend the rest on gear or a real riding course somewhere. She could fail a few times and you'd still be ahead $ wise.

But like I said, if you're looking for an easy pass, then go with a course. There are a few places that offer it, depending on where you live.

Thanks for the response and welcome.
Is that what the test to get the full M is called , M2 Exit?

Yeah, it's called "M2 exit" because you exit the M2 class and get into the M class. As long as she can handle a bike, she should pass the ministry test easily. Make sure it's mechanically up to snuff and that it'll pass safety without issues. I took it in Aurora because I didn't wanna bother with Toronto or Brampton stop'n'go. There is an M2 exit thread with the routes already posted (I marked mine in Google Earth and went over it a few times in high zoom) and lots of tips on passing (the most important ones are head on a swivel and make sure you're engaging the brake whenever you stop).

P.S. Welcome aboard

I took mine in Brampton. Traffic, highways, lots of lights and cars, and rain.

If you know how to ride you should be able to pass the test anywhere and under any condition. They really should make people test in the city.

Welcome evorider. If your wife does not want to take a course for M2 Exit test to get her M license, here is the list of all DriveTest locations where you just take a test. You can always pick one in a small town, like you mentioned:
http://www.drivetest.ca/en/loc/Dec.aspx

You can also check out this thread, which has a lot of information what happens at the test, and it also has maps of different routes:

Absolutely. You want to be exposed to lousy traffic. Dangerous situtations and bad drivers have no boundaries. You would be doing a disservice to your wife, I think. If she can't handle a mere test, what about a panic situation?

My exam was during Caribana weekend, 32 degrees in the Lawrence Ave/DVP/401. The congestion was pretty bad, but the pedestrians seemed downright suicidal. The ride home felt awesome.

I found the Oshawa test centre wasn't too bad and I booked at around 10am on a weekday so no rush hour traffic to deal with. Had to take a vacation day since there wasn't a exam on a weekend. Good luck.

+1 to Oshawa. I did mine there and so did a few of my riding friends.

but mmmnaked said it best, should be able to do the test in any condition.

Good luck!

Thanks guys you gave me some great info to go with. I didn't know they had an M2 Exit courses avail I and my wife always thought the m2 was that last course. She really has no problem handling the 800 lb bike as its all on the bottom, I had read somewhere that the bike has to be pushed through some pilons and if this is the case that sucks cuz all her moving around with the bike is with her sitting on it. Also what is meant by tire trailing or somethng like that?

first allways allways allways got to the MTO to get ur M. its only $75 and you can do it about 4 times if you have to, before you spend the same amount of money as doing it trough a colledge. and if you cant pass the test in about 4 times you shudnt ride.
next, for safety reasions i sugest doing it at least 1 time with in the gta where you have the most pressure and the most cars with the most drives who dont pay attenton to the road cause they are on the phone, applying make up, eating, roling weed, getting they willy sucked, waching a move, all while driving. and if she fails in the gta then gout out of gta. the test is same a a G test except they falow you in a car and give you instruction trough a radio.

I took the m2exit course at humber (hershey center) early last season. I donated to ride for sight and got the class for free as a 'prize'.

The course is literally just to get you to pass the m2 exit.

They teach you how to do things like when to check your blindspot, lane positioning, etc.

They also had a component where they set up a 180 degree turn in the parking lot and let us go as fast as we were comfortable with around it for about an hour. They critiqued peoples form etc (not much, but a little)

They also took us around the parking lot executing slow maneuvers.

Bottom line, if your wife can ride competently, then she will pass, she just has to remember to keep her head moving, look drastically at all school zones and fire stations, and keep a safe distance between herself and the cars in front of her.

Taking the course took me from passing the test with, lets say, 10 errors, to passing the test with 1 or 2 errors.

In all I did learn things that I wouldn't have if I had just done the test without the course. But is the course necessary? not at all unless your one of those people that got their M2, never got their own bike to practise on, and then realize a month before their license expires that they all of a sudden want their M

Don't you have to pay the $75each time you redo the redo the test because of a faiL?

+1 for Peterborough...piece of cake. Smaller city, barely any transport trucks. 10min and it was over.

Yeah.. 4 of those will equal 1 college m2x package.

Did mine at the drive centre at Aurora and Younge the instructor was a fellow biker less traffic because it was in the country side. I would recommend that test centre. If you do it during the middle of the day.

I did my test at Downsview (same with my G tests) which is supposed to be the hardest test in the GTA. I passed without an issue. If you know how to ride, know lane positions, shoulder check, signal and all that jazz, the test can be passed anywhere.

There is no reason to go to Peterborough or Bancroft for a simple drivers test.

I think you nailed it on the head with my biggest concern for her riding, she knows enough to not cross over into outside lane after going around corner but I beleive there is a proper lane position that I need to brush her up on which I;m not quite sure about, Is there some info here on that?
