earphones while riding?

hey all ... i was just wondering if it's legal to ride while listening to music with earphones in toronto/canada? not so much for downtown riding as you kinda need to be on your toes, but say on some open road. just wondering if a cop can nail you for it?

I've ridden with earphones plenty of times and never been hassled for it.
Highly doubt that it's illegal.

As long as a cop isn't behind you for mins with the sirens going and you not noticing I doubt they will say anything.
I have been pulled over with them in and the cop didn't say anything.

I've had cops watch me turn of my tunes before they spoke to me. It's fine. Of course like the poster above said, anything is fair game if it affects your safety, like ignoring sirens.

I believe it is illegal to wear headphones in a car.
Why would it not be illegal on a bike.
And besides, there are important audio cues you need to hear when on your motorcycle.
I drive in heavy traffic on a daily basis. I couldn't risk the extra danger.

I do it if there isn't much traffic. Cops have seen me and never complain.

It's only illegal if you have both buds in. If you have 1 bud in 1 ear, that is considered legal.

I use mine as earplugs as well. Cutting out the wind noise can make a world of difference in comfort over a long ride. Sometimes I just put them in and don't listen to music

Ditto! I have plugged in my headphone in front of cops and they never said anything to me either and I have never been given any kind of trouble in the past 4 years of almost 7-8 months of riding per season...

... It's illegal to have headphones on (over the head) or earphones in both ears in a car... Does that differ for a bike? o.O

I ride the Couchrocket with a headset in the helmet for gps prompts, intercom and tunes with auto mute overide and auto volume control. The bike comes with all this as standard dot approved equipment.

what kind of head phones are you guys using? I've tried it before but they keep falling out or coming loose after a bit.

I've told cops to give me a second while I pull them out, they've never said a word about them.

I use Creative EP-630 with Comply tips in the city and Etymotic ER-6i with the long Comply tips on the highway

Can anybody here post up the law stating that you can't have earphones on while driving/riding?

I found:
Entertainment devices
(2) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway while holding or using a hand-held electronic entertainment device or other prescribed device the primary use of which is unrelated to the safe operation of the motor vehicle. 2009, c. 4, s. 2.

But you don't have to be holding it while driving. Nothing to do with headphones.

I think it makes no difference because if i am on the highway i can hardly hear anything other than wind anyway, so if I have headphones in I don't hear any less. altho if i am in traffic i have will have one headphone in. Also i got pulled over 2days ago in halton and i put them in before i put my helmet back on and took off, never said anything. and if you have one headphone in it is the same thing as using a bluetooth headset in your car.
JMO.
Cheers,
Geoff

This has been discussed numerous times and I'm 99% sure the final verdict is that its legal. I do it all the time.
