Demo Ride Days 2022

Just got a call from Peak that they need to postpone Friday's demo day. They said the person who brings the bikes broke his collar bone. Not sure if this is someone with Peak or Ducati, so it may affect all demo days.

Demo Ride Report

I was at Peak today for my first demo ride sine the late 90's/early 2000's. I don't even remember which Japanese brand it was back then, but you basically showed up at the start, waited inline to register and hoped to get on something you'd like, as there was no reservations. For the KTM demo ride, you signed up in advance for both a specific model and time slot, showed up 30 minutes in advance to register and away you went. My appointment was 1pm, and they had a BBQ going with burgers and dogs and real cheddar cheese, no less. Also a cooler full of bottled water and cans of Bubly. Overall an excellent experience so far.

The route was reasonably twisty for the area, but with everyone riding on unfamiliar bikes and bunched up to stay with the leader, there was a lot of slow riding through the actual curves. No highway either, which was one of the things I really wanted to evaluate on the SMCR. The biggest downside was someone riding behind me who didn't seem to understand staggered formation and passed me in my lane a couple times while turning.

I really wanted to like this thing, but my first impressions of the 690 SMCR were a little underwhelming, so much that I wondered if the bike was in "Urban" or "Rain" mode. I was expecting gobs of torque from a big single, but I was told it was tuned for midrange power instead to get those HP numbers. It also felt and sounded very "agricultural", which is surprising for me to say, coming from along line of older Ducati twins. Overall, it reminded me of riding one of the Honda dirt bikes at the old Honda Ride Center in Pickering in the late 80's with no real sensation of speed. It had no tach, so it was hard for me to tell if I was under-revving it. Throttle response seemed on the slow side, not just comparing to my SXV which has a really light flywheel, but also my Hawk, 821 and 998. On a service road I was able to get it up to 95 and still had easily 2 if not 3 more gears to go, so it's likely geared super tall and killing a lot of the potential low speed excitement in exchange for highway capability and fuel efficiency. It would probably benefit greatly from some short gearing. So while there's nothing "wrong" with it, nothing really shouted out to me saying "buy me now".

FYI - myself and my colleague Aftab will act as lead and chase for Powersports TO's Suzuki Demo Day next Thursday July 21. Come ride some fast bikes (responsibly!) with us! 🤙 [Below is a re-post from the Dealer/Vendor forum, hope that's okay.]

Pre-registration is required to get on a demo bike - please call Aftab @ 416-657-6464 to book a time slot and a bike.

On Thursday July 21, we will be escorting 5 riders around a predetermined route at the top of every hour (10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm). Only one pre-registration allowed per rider - you may be able to ride a second bike if a later time slot is still open on the day of the event.

All riders will need a full M license since the bikes are larger displacement models.
