cheap online last minute hotel booking?

Hotwire.com is pretty good...if I do zero planning for a vacation I use them and book the hotel the day before (or even in the lobby of the hotel on a laptop)...good for road trips.

Lots of sites out there.

You can try Priceline and "name your own price" or use something like http://www.trivago.ca/ specifically for hotels, regardless if it's from hotwire, hotels.com, expedia, etc. It puts them all there.

best bet is to call the hotel themselves so that you save on online and booking fees.

I found this never works. Every hotel ive called has quoted prices well and truely above online prices. This isnt just a Canada phenomena its world wide.

I agree

Also, I find all those sites are the same price.

I use expedia.ca, just because it has never let me down.

The Hotel Tonight app is pretty good. Rooms get posted at around noon each day for that night... significant discounts and $25 in initial credits just for using it.

Although websites like Expedia have changed the travel industry quite a bit, I still prefer working with a travel agent even for last minute flights/hotels. Even if you can't get the room cheaper from an agent, you can usually get it for the same price as the websites but sometimes get decent perks.

For example, my travel agent always gets me a free buffet breakfast in addition to a $50 food/beverage credit whenever I stay at a Fairmont hotel that can be used at in-hotel restaurants, room service, or even the mini bar. I usually avoid those mini bars like the plague they are such a ripoff, but if don't have time to make use of the credit anywhere else you can bet I clean out that mini bar before I leave :)

I use expedia a fair bit mostly because I've never been left hanging. My last minute travel is almost always work so at the end of they day I'm not paying the full bill anyway with after tax dollars.
Last thing anybody wants is to be in a strange city when the college B'ball teams is playing the game of the decade and all the rooms are sold out within a 30km radius of your meeting
