cbr929 vs. zx7: which would you pick and why?

Hello everyone, a bit of a random topic, but which bike would you choose and why?

Im trying to decide which to buy. I am not able to test drive either bike, though I have been on a 900 fireblade before, as well as a zx6rr so i have some sort of an idea on the difference in bike feel. But, other than that, what would be some of your pro's and con's regarding your choice between these two bikes? i know this is a bit of an apples and oranges type of comparison, but none the less, help me decide!

The passionate decision would go to zx7 hands down. Real world long term use would go to cbr929. This is without research on either. I am somewhat flexible.

which one has cheaper insurance ?
i believe the 929 is prone to regulator/rectifier and stator failures

Good points. Thanks!

You know what interestingly for me the 929 proved to be cheaper with my ins. broker. but i will get a new quote this week just to be sure.
...I didnt know about those issues with the 929

If you put on a FH0020AA R/R it would solve the R/R problem and likely the stator too. That is what I did on my VFR as soon as I got it, even though its current R/R was fine, because it is prone to the same issues.

Just need a mosfet typ RR on the 929, I threw the stock shunt type RR in the garbage and fitted a mosfet type RR from a 2005 zx10 runs more stable in voltage and cooler.

The zx7 is a torture rack compared to the 929.

lol! are you saying that in a good way or a bad way? elaborate please!

I would choose the ZX7, not because i own one, i have been on my friend 929 several times, but to me the zx feels better, it definitely can get a bit uncomfortable after a few hours of riding, but you get use to it. Handling and performance are great for an older bike, i have owned mine for quite a few years and it's been reliable. In the end both the zx and 929 are nice bikes.

929 is a great all round sportbike, reasonably comfortable, outside of the above mentioned issues very reliable, and is a fair bit more modern a design than the 7 (ZX7 was pre R1, after which all big sportbikes got lighter / more powerful). Love the looks on those ZX7Rs, but the 929 is definitely a better all round bike.

Great thanks for the tips

thanks, yes 929 is more modern indeed.

Saw this cool zx7 'fighter at Rosey Toes last month.

Comes down to feel & less quantifiable things than just a spec sheet. 90's vintage Kwak's are rock solid to ride, very stable bikes, whereas the Honda will feel lighter & more flickable, closer to a "modern" 600.

The Honda has good FI, the ZX7 is carb'd and as close to stone age tech as you can get with a liquid cooled I4. With a manual & basic set of tools you can keep a ZX7 running forever. If you like to wrench in your driveway & do your own maintenance the ZX7 is dead nuts easy to work on.

But in every way you can measure, the Honda is the better bike, and more comfy.

Another thing to think about is previous owners. By now a ZX7 has been cheap for awhile and probably been through some hands that possibly have buggered up everything with hamfisted garage mechanics. 929's generally will have had a slightly more mature owners.

But the Kwak definitely sounds better though :D
Or you can go whole hog and transplant a ZX-9 motor into a ZX7 chassis, hee hee.

Thanks, good points! this is what makes it such a tough choice. I mean they are so different in many ways, yet I love both for their individual benefits.

We shall see what happens!

There's something to be said about the instantly recognizable looks of a ZX7

This is the RR version

I've ridden both quite a bit. The CBR wins in every possible way.

BUT......The ZX7 is still a nice bike if you can get on with the riding position which is a bit more extreme (unless you're talking about a 1990 ZX7 which is like a touring bike by comparison). The ZX7 is really stable and feels like a tank. The CBR is noticably lighter and more fun in every respect.

I dunno ... I certainly don't like working on carb'ed bikes with pressurized airboxes. And early FI systems are pretty simple themselves - the thing that most people actually don't like about FI vs carbs is that it's more complicated to tune.

I know you could argue this about nearly every sportbike in existence, but doesn't the ZX7 have a reputation for a weak transmission?
